Summary
Ever wondered what would happen to your life if you just said "screw the rules"?
Drayton Bird is one of the world’s best-known copywriters and direct marketing experts, having taught many thousands in 55 countries and worked with some of the world’s biggest organisations.
A former member of the worldwide board of Ogilvy and Mather, he was a close associate of the late David Ogilvy - perhaps the most influential advertising man of the 20th century.
His book, Commonsense Direct & Digital Marketing, is a classic, published in 17 languages and still selling after 57 years.
Like you, this author has two lives: public and private. This book mostly covers his private side - a little hectic, sometimes verging on scandalous.
He has been married three times and lived with three others.
He has been run over by one car and flown through the windscreen of another, hit by a motorbike, survived a train crash, and was stabbed nearly to death by infuriated women.
"What did I do to deserve all that?" he sometimes wonders.
Well, Drayton was also more than a little drunk for nearly 40 years, so cannot swear on his life that what you listen to in this audio is 100 percent true. But we suspect you’ll find it more than a little fascinating.
Because he’s also gone broke, lived under a false name for seven years, made - and lost - a million or two, and tried (unsuccessfully) to sell fake Chagall paintings.
In fact, all the things you really shouldn’t do if you want a quiet life.
But as he says, "Why be like everyone else? You might just as well never have lived."
We hope you’ll enjoy these snapshots of a life less ordinary: You Did What?!

Entertaining, but desperately in need of an editor
It would take a brave person to edit the work of one of the World's great copywriters, but this meandering, disorganised and often repetitive book could desperately do with it. One of the downsides of self-published works like this is that they can bypass such inconvenient conventions, which is a shame.
Bird has lived an entertaining life and is an entertaining storyteller, so the book is packed with amusing anecdotes in no particular order. There are also a few nuggets of wisdom scattered throughout.
But I lost count of the number of "that's another story we'll come to later", "I don't know if I mentioned this" and half-repeated stories which could have been easily trimmed had another set of eyes taken a look at it.
Bird has, by his own account, lived a debauched life, some of which he seems to regret, most of which he doesn't ask us to condone, and almost none of which he seeks to apologise for. In this way it reflects one of the books he mentions with admiration, Both The Ladies and the Gentlemen by William Donaldson, which I can heartily recommend.
Drayton is a natural narrator, though I found two short sections difficult to hear. It feels like sitting in a pub with someone shooting off a few entertaining tall tales over a frequently replenished glass of red,

So glad I listened instead of reading the book....
Drayton Bird was prolific, a huge name, in my early career in sales and marketing and, as such, it was odd to receive any industry mag that didn't have his name on every other page. So, imagine my delight opening up this gem. Was like going back to the early 90's and living it all again....and understanding some of the stories behind the headlines this time. Pure joy!
Tough to imagine he was reading this from a book, it really did have the feel of 'a conversation with DB'...which was a much nicer vibe.
Some excellent stories, although I imagine there are many more? Another book maybe? I hope so!

Had me chuckling
A breath of fresh air from the usual ‘standard’ information based books I read.
I love marketing and advertising and read, watched and listened to Drayton for many years.
This book was a wonderful weaving of a life during a time that’s disappeared in an industry that was very colourful by a man who in many ways reminds me very much of my late father.
As well as being hugely entertaining it was incredibly informative.
I was sad when in ended because it was such a joy to listen to.
I highly recommend listening to it, as hearing Drayton reading it, adds another special layer to your immersion.

Great listen
Insightful book from an advertising legend who knows how to tell a story. And does he have some stories to tell!
