About this listen
No one creates realms like New York Times best-selling author Anne Bishop. Now in a thrilling new fantasy series, enter a world inhabited by the Others, unearthly entities - vampires and shape-shifters among them - who rule the Earth and whose prey are humans.
As a cassandra sangue, or blood prophet, Meg Corbyn can see the future when her skin is cut - a gift that feels more like a curse. Meg's Controller keeps her enslaved so he can have full access to her visions. But when she escapes, the only safe place Meg can hide is at the Lakeside Courtyard - a business district operated by the Others.
Shape-shifter Simon Wolfgard is reluctant to hire the stranger who inquires about the Human Liaison job. First, he senses she's keeping a secret, and second, she doesn't smell like human prey. Yet a stronger instinct propels him to give Meg the job. And when he learns the truth about Meg and that she's wanted by the government, he'll have to decide if she's worth the fight between humans and the Others that will surely follow.

"Amazing...A compelling story set in a seamlessly crafted universe.” (Fresh Fiction)
“A stunningly original yarn, deeply imagined, beautifully articulated, and set forth in clean, limpid, sensual prose.” (Kirkus Reviews)
“Bishop has a way of making your heart wrench with joy and pain within a breath.” (Fantasy Book Critic)

Interesting take on shifters.
This is the first book in a series of five. They're set in an alternate North America, where the wild country is still wild, and humans are tolerated..
Or eaten. The setting is a 'Courtyard' occupied by the Others, who are wolf, coyote, crow, hawk and bear shifters, together with vampires. They are so well depicted, having primarily the characteristics of their animals and the ability to take human form, rather than the reverse. They have contact with humans, but hold them greatly in contempt - until they take in a young woman one stormy night. And things begin to change... Listen, laugh, and enjoy.
The narrator is OK, reads very clearly but with strange stresses. You get used to this after a while. It's a minor Irritant. Don't let it put you off listening to this book. Or the rest of the series.

Brilliant
Absolutely excellent read. The characters were real, the plot was believable and narration brought the world to life. Looking forward to the next book in the series.

Light on the romance side
I liked the paranormal characters and the world building passages.
It's light on the romance but I do enjoy a slow build so let's see. Moving on to book 2.

Speed Up The Narration
I wasnt a fan of the narration initally, until I realised I could speed up the playback a bit so the narrator sounded more natural, like she was telling a story rather than reading a book. After that, I thoroughly enjoyed the book. If you dont like the narration at first, just tweak it a bit.

An Good Escape from real life
I thoroughly enjoyed being transported to another world, with remarkable similarities to this one, and being told a morality tale concerning racism whilst being entertained by a good yarn.

Not perfect but I loved it
Where does Written in Red rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
Not the best book I have ever listened to but its not far off.
Slightly slow start and in places its a bit Young Adult rather than grown up but it more than makes up for it with a gripping (if predictable ) story. Once I got into it I couldn't stop listening to find out what happens next.
What other book might you compare Written in Red to, and why?
Has some similarities to the Mercy Thompson books except our heroine is a prophet instead of a cayote who falls for a wolf.
There are big differences though in the world building with the paranormal creatures being somewhat different to standard Werewolf bear etc, and even the Vampires don't follow all the normal rules.
What does Alexandra Harris bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?
I took a while to warm to her as the reading was a bit Jackanory style to being with though that's partly the fault of the book, its introductory chapters are not as good as the rest, probably because they are scene setting. But she has a good range of voices for the Characters, and once I got used to her I really did enjoy her narration. Loved her wolf howls!
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Hard to answer without spoilers but the reaction of Winter when Megs life is in danger I really liked." Follow that Sleigh " must be one of the best lines.
That and when Sam explains the safety line and buddy system
Any additional comments?
If you like Paranormal Fantasy this book is definitely worth a try - its more action than romance thought there is a slow burning something going on between Meg and Simon. None of the sex you get in some books of this type, but it doesn't need it. The story is original in concept - its so good I got to the end and and did the whole thing all over again - and am now half way through book 2

Wonderfull
Wonderfull funny and heartwarming story, narrated, in my ears, by an extremely pleasing voice. A voice, I will try to find other titles by.
I have read this book already two times, and was really surprised how fresh it was a third time, just because it was read aloud.
