About this listen

After surviving two brutal attacks that nearly killed him, Bradley Danforth was determined to put them behind him and move on with his life. He moved into a new house on the other side of town and made a new resolve to live his life to the fullest. Only, Bradley can’t seem to get the one person out of his mind who let him down the most: Max Donohue. When he starts receiving threatening messages, Max is the first person Bradley turns to for help.

Max is a homicide detective who quickly learned that the job is about more than catching the bad guy and being a hero. When he’s assigned a cold case, he’d rather leave it alone. Max knows he must face a past he buried a long time ago, so he can close it, once and for all. Max is soon immersed in more than just a murder as he discovers evidence of corruption and a massive cover-up. The combination of working the cold case and battling his demons is enough to send Max into a downward spiral, but when Bradley comes to him for help, Max finds the strength to do whatever he can to keep him safe.

Will Max step up to the challenge he failed to overcome before, or will someone succeed in ending Bradley’s life, once and for all?

With a Friend’s Strength is the second installment of the Badge and Bullets series featuring the same two characters. It is a suspenseful murder mystery that depicts detailed crimes, strong language, and adult situations. While this series will include a romance, it’s a slow-burn that develops throughout the series.

Thrilling listen

Book one of this series - At a Stranger’s Mercy is one of my top listens last year and I wondered how well book two would live up to my high expectations. Well the answer was...easily. With a Friend’s Strength is amazing. It takes place after book one and all the traumatic events that happened there for Bradley. The events in book two throw the two of them back together again with more troubles on the horizon.

I loved Bradley in book one, and I loved him no less this time. We also get to see another side of Max, and consequent another side of Bradley as he’s there for Max this time. The story ended in a way that yet again I’m desperate for more because I need to know what happens to the over arching story arc - plus what happens between Max and Bradley.

Again Kenneth Obi’s narration is spot on. All characters are distinct and easy to identify. He keeps me just as hooked on while listening as I normally am when reading a book - and this doesn’t happen for me easily. I can’t wait for book 3!

as good as the ebook

The story is always full stars, because if I wouldn't like the story as ebook, I wouldn't listen to the audiobook.

The performance from the narrator is also very important for me. I can't listen to a lot, because my English as a non-native-speaker isn't so perfect to follow a whole story over hours, when the narrator speaks too fast or too sloppy. Normally I have to SEE the person, who is talking to me in English. Kenneth Obi is one of the 3 narrators (so far), I can listen without break and have no problems to follow. I'm just not yet finish with the book, but I listen enough to give a review.

PLEASE READ MY RATING SYSTEM!!!

To my ratings:

5* - very very good
it's like an A+

4* - very good and will be often re-listening
it's like an A

3* - it's more then a one-time-listening.
it's like a B

Well voiced

Having thoroughly enjoyed both story and narration for the first book in the series, I held out great hopes for a similar reaction to this one. It is nearly there, but the plot didn't quite reach the heights of Book 1.

This story progresses at a much slower pace. I was surprised, at 20% in, that the read hadn't really moved far beyond an introduction. There is certainly a lot more "tell" in this book. Once things got going, I fell in love again with the interactions between Bradley and Max, and was thrilled to witness the (slow) growth of their romantic relationship. There is still a long way to go with both the mystery and their relationship and I am looking forward to the next book.

Kenneth Obi is again excellent as he voices Bradley and Max. Max continues to growl and the inherent strength in Bradley's character is more evident this time. The secondary characters' voices are all different and good, and I particularly like his portrayal of females which I suspect is down to lots of practice.
