About this listen
Behind her back, they call her "The Black Widow".
Daphne McNeil has been widowed four times in 10 years. Each time, her husbands have left her considerable sums of money. She finds that she must use these inheritances to support her beloved charities. The money does not go far enough, and with increasing financial pressures, she becomes desperate.
When Steve Johnson, a forensic scientist, discovers human remains in an isolated lake near Daphne’s drug and alcohol rehabilitation center, he unwittingly puts himself in danger.
He begins to suspect the beautiful widow is not as innocent as she seems. Will he become her next victim?

Interesting idea, great narration
Daphne McNeil has been widowed four times, earning her the nickname Black Widow in the local town. She runs a rehab facility for the wealthy and seems to have the knack of finding husbands through her clientele. Her father established the facility and Daphne is determined to keep it afloat. She also has a very strong need to help orphans in Africa, she pays for an orphanage to be built but the constant demands for money had me screaming “scam” at the daft woman in my loudest voice! Daphne constantly needs money for her philanthropic ventures and her husbands become a good source of income, all leaving her a substantial inheritance. When Steve Johnson comes into her life Daphne he becomes her new project but has her luck finally run out? Excellent narration by Bill Nevitt.

The narration is excellent.
It's an accepted fact that the best book can be ruined by poor narration. Unfortunately, the opposite isn't true. A not great book cannot be redeemed by superb narration. I wouldn't have finished this if it hadn't been for the magnificent performance by Bill Nevitt. But even his limitless talent couldn't work a miracle on this weird, unfathomable story. A widow, a drug rehab facility, African orphans, orgies, were just a few threads that never seemed to connect. I think the whole story around Africa was silly and unnecessary. Was the author trying to get us to believe that at heart, Daphne was a good person? I'm sorry, for the story, a gave a star for having the bravery to put pen to paper and another star for making it into an audio book. The narrator gets 5 stars for his superb performance under extremely trying circumstances. I'll definitely keep my eye out for anything narrated by Mr Nevitt. I can't say the same for the author. Sorry - not for me. .

Great narrator - shame about the story!
There's a famous historical character called Bess of Hardwick. She was married and widowed four times and each time married a richer man. Not bad for someone from the 1600s.
Our heroine has similar good fortune as her husbands pop their clogs one after another. Unfortunately, the characters lack depth and the story lacked the kind of excitement that I would expect from this genre. I quite liked the fact that Steve was a geocacher as I've done a bit of that myself. But apart from that I found the story uninspiring and just too far-fetched.
The narrator however was excellent! Bill Nevitt always brings such energy and fun to his audiobooks and he is a joy to listen to. His voices for the characters were spot on and I gave his performance 5 stars.

You do not know how much this means to me.
Daphne was an attractive, flirtatious woman who used her charms to attract rich males to finance the orphanages she had built in Africa. She married and murdered them, usually slowly and with little intelligence. Her story, told in conjunction with that of Steve, a geocacher, tells of her exploits. The writing is flat, no character development and the who!e is reminiscent of a poor man's version of the superb cinematic comedy Kind Hearts and Coronets - but without the !aughter.
Even the narration by Bill Nevitt cannot lift this book above the mediocre, although the basic idea , rewritten, could make an amusing film.
Playback was set at 1.25 as it otherwise felt too slow.
My thanks to the rights holder of Widow's Luck, who, at my request freely gifted me with a complimentary copy. It was a very light, slightly irritating story, given the foolish main protagonist, and not one I would recommend

Different
The widow of the story starts off taking over her fathers business then the money starts to dry up. The husbands though don’t dry up & the money from them is very inviting.
Trouble follows her about big time.
The book was good, different but a bit far fetched at times
Narrator was good , kept tempo & voices going throughout.

What a tangled web we weave
I enjoyed this book but oh boy what happened? The story just ended, I guess it is up to the listener to make up there own mind how the story unfolds. The story is told by two of the characters and it isn't until near the end that the two worlds collide. There is no sex scenes or violence, even though the black widow weaves her magic and it was interesting how she carries out her plans and gets away with it but I just wish some of the questions got answered.
Daphne is a very clever woman unfortunately she can't pick the right husband as four husbands have died all in the space of ten years. The one good thing about being a widow is that each time the men in her life dies they leave her with money, money that she can use to fund orphanages in Africa. She also runs a drug treatment centre in her father's name and this is where she meets Steve not because he is looking for treatment but because he is looking for a bed to spend the night. Steve travel around the country as a forensic mobile until, traveling to where the police needs him to investigate with his ex drug dog companion. But is it really a good idea for the black widow to let a man who likes solving mysteries into her home and even her bed or will the spider become the hunted?
I like Bill Nevitt as the narrator because he does a good job with the story, giving each character a voice that can be heard in the unusual story.
I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
