About this listen

This is a short history of the famous old seaport of Whitby, from the ancient Celts, right up to the present-day Steampunks and Goths, who I must say have revived the town's spirit and made it an even more interesting and exciting place to explore.

Whitby has many connections not just with England, but with the far corners of the world; this due to its ability to produce first-class explorers like Captain Cook and the Scoresby captains, father and son.

There's everything from marauding Dutch privateers running amok in the harbor, to the tragic shipwrecks that have occurred over the years on its sometimes treacherous and rugged North Sea coast, as well as more genteel moments with the several famous writers who lived in or visited the town over the years.

Something for everyone then, in a hopefully palatable way that will keep you wanting to hear more.

I lived and worked in the town as a harbor officer back in the 1980s. My insight into its past and ways is therefore probably more personal and subjective than that of a writer who has approached it from a purely research perspective, as you will discover and hopefully enjoy.
