Summary

This semi-autobiographical classic, written by Judith Kerr, tells the story of a Jewish family escaping Germany in the days before the Second World War.

Tacy Kneale, Judith’s daughter, reads this extraordinary audio edition of the unforgettable adventure Michael Morpurgo called “The most life-enhancing book you could ever wish to read.”

Silver, Best Children’s Audiobook, New York Festival Radio Awards

Suppose your country began to change. Suppose that without your noticing, it became dangerous for some people to live in it any longer, and you found, to your surprise, that your own father was one of those people. This is what happened to Anna in 1933.

Anna is too busy with her schoolwork and tobogganing to listen to the talk of Hitler. But one day she and her brother Max are rushed out of Germany in alarming secrecy, away from everything they know. Their father is wanted by the Nazis. This is the start of a huge adventure, sometimes frightening, very often funny and always exciting.

Judith Kerr wrote When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit fifty years ago, based on her own journey, so that her own children would know where she came from and the lengths to which her parents went to keep her and her brother safe. It has gone on to become a beloved classic that is required reading for many children all over the world and is an unforgettable introduction to the real-life impact of the Second World War.

To celebrate fifty years of this momentous classic this new audio version of the book, read by Judith’s daughter, actor and artist Tacy Kneale, creates a heartfelt and truly memorable rendition of this much-loved story.

Fans of Judith Kerr Delight

I have loved Judith Kerr books since I was a child. I was reading this book as a possibility to use in the classroom to teach WWII however I have now realised what a wonderful story it is for me personally as a fan of the author. To know what I know now about her early childhood is incredible and I will never read her books again in the same way. I also wish I’d read this before her death so I could have mourned her properly.

What an amazing story of pre-war life.

Full of love and hope in dark times - more please!

I loved this story and it ended all too soon - I really hope they record the rest of the series! I found it especially poignant in light of what's now happening in Ukraine, and so moving to hear it narrated (and so beautifully) by Tracy. I am in awe of how it manages to be so uplifting and hopeful and joyful while also being honest about the awful situation in a way that every child and adult can relate to.

Charming story, beautifully narrated

This has been on my reading pile for too long, so I was pleased when it came up as a daily deal. A different perspective on WW2, told from a young Jewish girl. It’s a must for upper primary children. I enjoyed listening to this.

Wonderful, real story bringing history to life.

A child’s eye recollection of her family’s exile from Germany, via Switzerland and France to England. I loved the details that were described as a child would prioritise them and the insight into emotions was really heartwarming. Not just for children.

A real life perspective of life as a war refugee child from one of our best known children's authors.

Given the account was from the 1930's when she was a child, Judith Kerr's memory of escaping Nazi Germany to live in France is vivid and detailed. Interesting from a historical point of view and moved along at a good pace to keep us engaged as a family on a long car journey

Very enjoyable

Beautifully written and performed. I enjoyed this so much on its own merits as a story but also because I was invested in Judith Kerr’s personal experience at the heart of it. I would recommend to adults, parents and children of about age 9 and up.

Always felt like more was to happen

I listened to this book after hearing about it on social media. I can't help but feel that the family did not go from rich to poor, but from rich to slightly less rich. Nevertheless, the life of Anna and her family - being refugees in several countries - is one worth listening to and gives reason to think about the myriad of complications and disturbances practically and psychologically that arise from being a refugee in a foreign land.
