Critic reviews

"A fantastic novelist...so far above the prevailing standards of crime fiction that it is pointless to make the comparison." ( Daily Express)

A Masterpiece

I just cannot fault this author's output. A story that weaves together all that is good & bad in people, the state & our relationships & consequences of change. The narration is flawless, Will Patton has the skill to make the very most of his voice. The author must have been delighted with his reading. Excellent.

Magnificent

Beautiful elegiac prose, stunning evocation of both landscape and time, wonderful picaresque characters. All this and a narrator who is perfect . What's not to love?

Chandler with a Southern Accent

Not an author I would normally have considered but, as he came recommended by heavyweight political journalist James Naughtie, I decided to take a chance. Naughtie described JLB as a cross between Raymond Chandler and William Faulkner and he’s entirely correct. The book is a thriller to rank alongside The Big Sleep and Farewell My Lovely, with Chandleresque dialogue and a beautiful Faulkner/Capote southern flavour.

The narration, by Will Patton, is perfect.

Completely fabulous

One of the best books I have heard/read. Compelling if often unpleasant story, beautifully written in poetic prose. Excellent reader too. Cannot recommend too highly.

Can't beat Burke

There is something about Burke's writing that has me in the palm of his hand. He will drag you down to the very pit of hell and then bring you back to the surface, gasping for breath. A class act all round.

My first Burke

Excellent. What prose and weaving in some literary greats too, Chaucer and T S Eliot! Gripping story but felt the ending rather abrupt. Now moving on to the next.

Supurb descriptive writing

The voice cadence, tone & pace enhanced the authors atmospheric writing. An interesting story with good historical research very enjoyable.

An Americana Class

This book is right up there with the best of the classics although it has to be said the ending is a little weak. Fantastic oration by Will Patton. He was the perfect selection for this work.

A fantastic story

A wonderfully written story that touches on so many faucets of life from love to hate, from honesty to lies, from kindness to cruelty. It spans a period of history that starts in the depression, progresses to the death camps in Nazi Germany and comes to rest in the oil fields of Texas. Beautifully read it's one of the finest stories I've listened to. Burke is a genius !
