Summary
Is America in a new Cold War with Russia? How does a new Cold War affect the safety and security of the United States? Does Vladimir Putin really want to destabilize the West? What should Donald Trump and America’s allies do?
America is in a new Cold War with Russia even more dangerous than the one the world barely survived in the 20th century. The Soviet Union is gone, but the two nuclear superpowers are again locked in political and military confrontations, now from Ukraine to Syria. All of this is exacerbated by Washington’s war-like demonizing of the Kremlin leadership and by Russiagate’s unprecedented allegations. US mainstream media accounts are highly selective and seriously misleading. American “disinformation”, not only Russian, is a growing peril.
In War with Russia?, Stephen F. Cohen - the widely acclaimed historian of Soviet and post-Soviet Russia - gives listeners a very different, dissenting narrative of this more dangerous new Cold War from its origins in the 1990s, the actual role of Vladimir Putin, and the 2014 Ukrainian crisis to Donald Trump’s election and today’s unprecedented Russiagate allegations. Topics include:
- Distorting Russia
- US Follies and Media Malpractices 2016
- The Obama Administration Escalates Military Confrontation With Russia
- Was Putin’s Syria Withdrawal Really a “Surprise”?
- Trump vs. Triumphalism
- Has Washington Gone Rogue?
- Blaming Brexit on Putin and Voters
- Washington Warmongers, Moscow Prepares
- Trump Could End the New Cold War
- The Real Enemies of US Security
- Kremlin-Baiting President Trump
- Neo-McCarthyism Is Now Politically Correct
- Terrorism and Russiagate
- Cold-War News Not “Fit to Print”
- Has NATO Expansion Made Anyone Safer?
- Why Russians Think America Is Attacking Them
- How Washington Provoked - and Perhaps Lost - a New Nuclear-Arms Race
- Russia Endorses Putin, the US and UK Condemn Him (Again)
- Russophobia
- Sanction Mania
Cohen’s views have made him, it is said, “America’s most controversial Russia expert”. Some say this to denounce him, others to laud him as a bold, highly informed critic of US policies and the dangers they have helped to create.
War with Russia? gives listeners a chance to decide for themselves who is right: are we living, as Cohen argues, in a time of unprecedented perils at home and abroad?

Yes, you should read this.
Very good and important read. The book left me wanting Cohen to comment on events up until today. Sad to see many indoctrinated americans review bombing the book because it breaks their world view.

A Chronology Of Western Lies
Having taken a keen interest in Putin since the invasion of Ukraine, I had come to realise that the Western narrative regarding Putin had little relation to reality, not to mention the Western whitewashing of the violent imhuman fascists who have taken control of Ukraine.
Now I understand better how this unbelievable situation has come to pass. Cohen states he never understood why, which is indeed a quandary. I think it is clear why now, Something that was inconceivable to Cohen.

Prophetic
He was right. The rest of the media was wrong. To see how we got here, read this. Great narration too.

Prophetic
Because this book is a collection of essays, I did not expect much of this book, and only bought it because of the stellar reputation of the late professor Stephen Cohen. But it is actually rather informative: there is rather little that dealt solely with current events at the time it was written, and it helped retrace the steps that led us to the current situation.
If people like Cohen were listened to, as opposed to the neoconservatives responsible for one humanitarian disaster after another, and one failed prediction after another, then the current disaster in Ukraine would have been avoided. Please note that the people claiming 'inaccuracies' speak only in generalities and cannot actually point to a single inaccuracy in this book.

Deeply flawed
Embattled condescending Putin apologist. Riddled with strawman arguments, falsehoods and doubtful assumptions stated as fact. Is especially awful in light of invasion of Ukraine. Wish I had known how biased this book was before I bought it. Not the reasoned alternative perspective I was hoping for.

Mendacious Drivel
Stephen Cohen's view is that the west/Nato/USA = bad and Russia/Soviet Union/ Putin = good. He completely ignores anything which doesn't conform to his world view. If you want an objective of what's happening in Russia today you should try reading
Putin's People by Catherine Belton
Putin's Wars by Marcel H. van Herpen
Ukraine by Serhy Yekelchyk
Cohen really was an apologist for Putin - don't waste your money.
Oh, and you can't accidentally get polonium poisoning London - yes he did say that......

This is essentially 18 hours of moaning about the west and how Putin is misunderstood

Wouldnt recommend this
Unfortunately, this is quite an unbalanced and at times factually inaccurate book. The prologue alone contains historical inaccuracies. It is probably better thought of as: how those supportive or apologetic for the Russian state view and justify its actions. Thats not to say its without value - its very important to understand this perspective. Its just a shame, for me, that this wasnt clear before buying the book.
I was hoping for something quite balanced and even handed in its treatment of events (which is obviously quite difficult to achieve). The book is primarily a criticism of western actions in relation to russia, which is a necessary and valuable subject to cover. Unfortunately, I find myself doubting many of the books claims due to the already stated inaccuracies and lack of critical balance
