Summary
In early nineteenth-century Russia, the threat of Napoleon’s invasion looms, and the lives of millions are about to be changed forever. This includes Pierre Bezúkhov, illegitimate son of an aristocrat; Andrew Bolkónski, ambitious military scion; and Natásha Rostóva, compassionate daughter of a nobleman. All of them are unprepared for what lies ahead. Alongside their fellow compatriots - a catalog of enduring literary characters - Pierre, Andrew, and Natásha will be irrevocably torn between fate and free will.
Through the bonds of love and family, and all that can break them, Tolstoy examines the effects of war on every strata of society in his masterwork of intimate - and epic - social history.
Revised edition: Previously published as War and Peace, this edition of War and Peace (AmazonClassics Edition) includes editorial revisions.

Incredible!
Incredible book, performance and experience. A journey full of ups and downs, trials and tribulations and performed majestically.

Superb performance and book
I challenged myself to listen to this thinking that I would quit. However here I am listening to the appendices.
It's long, but no longer than binging on Netflix and 10x the quality.
The book changed my view of Russian and European history and culture - a must read in my my view.

recording is warbly half way through
a fascinating story, well read, with good pronunciation of all the foreign names and parts. sadly on about chapter 149 the recording quality is very poor and the sound annoyingly warbly and breaking up.

One of those real masterpieces
The narration is superb. It can be a difficult book at times, because it has so many characters, but there is so much life even in the episodic apparitions. I recommend to read or listen to Anna Karenina first, which is superior to this.

An epic classic full of wisdom
This is a novel I promised myself I would read but until recently haven’t had the time or the stamina. Much has been written about its brilliance by readers, other writers and literary and historical academics, with which I agree. I enjoyed the way in which Tolstoy weaves the grand tales of Russian and European history with the detail of the everyday life of the Russian aristocracy. My preference for the latter is probably a reflection of the distaste anyone of sound mind must have for the gore and distress of the battlefield. What surprised me more than anything was Tolstoy’s prescience and enduring wisdom about society and human nature, The long read is worth it for this alone.

Terrific book
Love how Tolstoy mixes history with drama, performance is great but I would have preferred someone less American

Perhaps the best novel ever written
The characters, the history, the nuance; everything is done to perfection! A tome yes, but not one that you have to force yourself through. The weaving of the different people and times is masterful and prose silken. A true masterpiece of the ages and rightfully oft dubbed the greatest novel ever written!
