About this listen

Fairacre is a village of cottages, a church and the school - and, at the heart of the school, its head mistress Miss Read. Through her discerning eye, we meet the villagers of Fairacre and see their trials and tribulations, from the irascible school cleaner Mrs Pringle, to the young school children, with their scraped knees, hopeful faces and inevitable mischief. Full of Miss Read's unique, acerbic wit, and wry observations, Village School is an intriguing glimpse into a forgotten world, and has become a true classic.

A beautiful book, perfect narration

I have already listened to this book twice and will listen to it over and over again throughout the years. It is a beautiful book. Phyllida Nash narrated it perfectly, she did a marvellous job with all the different accents, and all the different voices - male and female. Sound quality is excellent, you can hear every word clear as a bell. This is one of those rare books that provides a lovely place for you to go.

A Charming Tale of Times Gone By

Delightfully nostalgic story of a country village. Centred around the school with colourful characters and childish scrapes. Very enjoyable.

A lovely, heartwarming story of days gone by

Really enjoyed this book, it was very gentle, a year in the life of a rural primary school. Most of the characters were lovely and it was easy listening.

The narrator was excellent and I could always tell who was speaking.

Such joy and delight!

Beautifully written, moving, funny, gentle and yet razor-sharp, this book is another piece of perfection by the one and only Miss Read. Phyllida Nash's flawless reading further elevates both the book's charm and the reader's enjoyment. Highly recommended!

Enchanting Miss Read

A delightful reading of a wonderful book. Thoroughly enjoyable tale of a year at the village school from the start of the new year with some new pupils to the sad leaving of Miss Clare and the wedding of Miss Grey. Something to listen to no matter the weather but especially good on a drab and dreary day or a cold winters evening.

Beautifully read, completely enthralling and nostalgic stories of a time gone by, with timeless characters!!!

Absolutely LOVED this version, I wish the whole series was read by Ms Nash, her expression is just perfect for it, you can even tell when she’s as amused by the funny bits as the listener is!! Delightful listen - makes me long to be at primary school again in the early 70s! I was lucky enough to have had aged teachers whose experience was gained through these decades!
