Summary

Beatrice Johnson Greene, a bestselling crime writer, has an unusual favor to ask. When a chance encounter brings Emma Fern into her life, she thinks she's found just the person for the job. Soon Beatrice will wish they'd never met.

For Emma, desperate to please, it's an offer she can't refuse. All she has to do is lend her name to Beatrice's next novel, her first in a new genre. But when the book becomes a huge triumph, Emma finds herself the toast of the literary world. From nobody to somebody without writing a word.

It's her first taste of success, and now Emma wants more. This is her masterpiece, after all. It says so on the cover.

Only Beatrice knows the truth. And surely there's a solution to that.

Enjoyed it but the narrator sounds like a robot

I listened to both the books in this series. it feels odd that they are narrated by different people, but it was a relief in a way. I tried to get past the fact that the narrator of the first book sounded like an automated voice but it grated.
In both books there was a repetitive element of the main character nearly throwing up and fainting with stress and then her spending days ignoring situations that would have most people crumbling.
Overall these were worth a listen but not the best books I've ever listened to.

Thoroughly enjoyed it

4.5⭐️ 🎧

A debut thriller.
I had the audiobook read by Kate Rudd, a good performance, with great distinct voices.

Emma strikes up a friendship with her favourite author Beatrice Johnson-Greene who asks her to publish her latest novel under her name. It becomes a huge success, leaving Emma wanting more, and she’ll stop at nothing to get it.

I do like a book within a book premise. It’s got a really easy light sarcastic tone.

I can’t say I found either of the main characters likeable, but that didn’t stop me totally engaging with the story.

It’s got a great pace, lots going on throughout, I enjoyed how the plot unfolded, it’s not a complex plot but it has neat twists and turns. It’s very entertaining.
I loved it, and look forward to the sequel.

*When Greed Takes Over*

Emma is a young woman who owns a store and is married and has a secret yearning to write. She has a favourite author Beatrice Johnson Greene who one day turns up in her store. She makes a purchase and asks Emma to deliver it and she obliges.

Beatrice then wants to take Emma out as a thank you and over time she befriends her and makes a proposition. She has written a novel which is a departure from her usual crime books and wants to use Emma’s name as the author because she feels it may hurt her reputation if the book doesn’t sell.

After much convincing over time Emma agrees. There in lies the problem. The book does much better than expected and we see a change in Emma, she behaves as if she wrote the novel, even her husband is in the dark.

Then when the book grows and maybe nominated for an award, Beatrice feels it’s time to come clean, this is not what Emma wants she thinks the book is hers and no one is going to get in her way…… there are a few shocks on the way as we find out exactly how far she will go to keep her secret and in all her angst to do so, what will it do to her marriage…… will her lies finally catch up with her…..

Great book, awful narration

As others have said, the book is great, but the narrator sounds computer generated. I put it on 1.05x speed, which improved it a little. Fortunately the book caught me quickly, so I persevered.

Dreadful narration

I couldn’t listen beyond the first couple of lines. The narration is painfully slow and the narrator’s voice too dreary to compel me to listen further. A shame.
