About this listen

United States of True Crime is an anthology series with books devoted to the most disturbing cases in each of the 50 states. This audiobook focuses on 20 of the most chilling crimes in California history.

True crime junkies may recognize some of the highly publicized cases, but I’ve made sure to include lesser-known, equally unsettling crimes.

Cases included in this book:

  • Joseph James DeAngelo: serial killer who only got caught through DNA evidence almost four decades after his first murder.
  • Lonnie David Franklin, Jr: serial killer on the LA Southside who inexplicably took a two decade hiatus from his crimes.
  • Samuel Little: most prolific serial killer in the United States. The FBI believes he’s responsible for 93 murders.
  • Gerald and Charlene Gallego: killer husband and wife duo who abducted young girls to use as sex slaves.
  • Kidnapping of Denise Huskins and Aaron Quinn: a young couple was kidnapped and then accused by law enforcement of faking the horrific ordeal.
  • The Unsolved Doodler Murders: serial murderer who targeted homosexual men in the 1970s.
  • Zebra Killers: racially motivated murders of white citizens in San Francisco.
  • Brenda Ann Spencer: the original school shooter.
  • Juan Corona: convicted of the murders of 25 migrant workers.
  • Mardiros Iskenderian: murdered his mother and sister in a dispute over the family fortune.
  • Patrick Kearney: serial killer who murdered at least 21 boys and disposed of their bodies in trash bags across Southern California.
  • The Chinese Massacre of 1871: dispute that resulted in the murder of 18 Chinese immigrants; believed to be the most lethal example of racial violence ever recorded in Los Angeles.
  • Leonard Lake & Charles Ng: murderous partners who abducted couples, murdering the males and holding females in their dungeon.
  • Gordon Stewart Northcott: serial murderer who targeted boys in the 1920s.
  • Kevin James Woodward: tech CEO who allegedly killed his roommate’s girlfriend out of jealousy.
  • Timothy Joseph McGhee: ruthless gang leader responsible for at least 12 murders.
  • The Mysterious Death of Natalie Wood: Hollywood starlet who drown while vacationing with her husband on his yacht under mysterious circumstances.
  • The Murder of Tushar Atre: tech millionaire murdered by his employees.
  • Omaima Nelson: woman who murdered her husband and admitted to eating his body.
  • Rodney Halbower: another woman spent almost 30 years in jail for one of his grisly murders until the real murderer was finally convicted through DNA found at the scene.

If you’re a true crime enthusiast who enjoys learning about some of the most depraved monsters in our country, you will love United States of True Crime: California.

Collected true crime stories linked to California.

The author narrates the book and so reads with understanding and passion where appropriate. Most stories relate to murder and/or rape as the subtitle claims the most chilling have been selected. There is even cannibalism. The author at the outset makes clear she is trying not to editorialise and setting out facts more than opinions. I can understand this approach to avoid potential litigation, but it becomes a rather dry and repetive litany of callous criminals. Not really a book to consume in one sitting, although it is short enough for that. I was impressed with the amount of research presented here.
I think providing a PDF giving the name(s), date(s) and locations(s) of the cases and criminals would enhance the understanding. A range of dates are presented so no-one can remember all of these cases when current. Outside the USA, some of these will be unknown. Serial killers and killing is discussed and more analysis of lessons to be learned would also enhance this work. Some cases could have been included in other state's collections, so I felt the attribution was somewhat arbitrary.
I received a free copy through Booksprout, and am leaving this review voluntarily.
