About this listen

MaryJanice Davidson's cult hit Undead and Unwed is a delightful mixture of Sex and the City and Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Waking up in a tacky coffin and wearing off-brand shoes, Betsy Taylor can't believe the horrible turn her life has taken; then she discovers she's a vampire. Soon, Betsy becomes a participant in a power struggle between the forces of darkness. With only her friend Jessica and the hunky vampire Sinclair to help her, this new "Queen of Vampires" will have a tough time getting her afterlife straight.

"Sexy, steamy, and laugh-out-loud funny, Davidson's chick-lit foray into the paranormal is delightful." ( Booklist)

Trying too Hard

I was looking for a funny paranormal romance when I found this (recommended by a Good Reads thread). It's a light read with a decent narrator about a fairly shallow girl becoming undead. It has some interesting angles on the common vampire theme. However, this book is trying too hard to be both flippant and funny. Try hard funny always fall flat. The heroine is deliberately unlikable, but her "witty" point of view doesn't quite make up for this. It always gives me hives when anyone, let alone a main character, states "I know what is and isn't racist" especially if their reasoning is because they have a black friend - yikes. The shoe obsession is a think meant to be cute, but it's pretty labored and this book seems to be setting up for longer series (which I will not be reading) so doesn't feel like it has a whole story.

Brings back memories

So I read this series years ago and have the paper copies as I'd laugh out loud everytime. Ok so I don't get the same effect when listening to the audio book (I must just be a funnier narrator in my head) but I love Betsy and SinkLair.

A TV series is needed

I totally agree with the other reviewer about the narrators bizarre English accent for one character (which thankfully was only a short appearance). As I was listening to the story unfold, I got a mental image of Katherine Ryan as the main character, and now I am certain this needs to be made into a TV series with Katherine playing the lead. She'd be perfect!
As for the story itself - A little predictable but still enjoyable. it took a while for the plot to get going, but still a good and funny listen.

Very funny and entertaining.

Apart from the narrator's terrible English accent for one character, this was an excellent listen.

Really great listen!

You know, I looked at one of the reviews on this story before I started listening and I almost didn’t give it a try because of it. But I’m so glad I ignored it. It made me realise that some people just like to vent and moan, and they’re entitled to they’re opinion.

However, my opinion is that this is a fantastic and unique story! It made me laugh out loud more times than I can count and made me an addict! 😂 In a good way!

The narrator starts off speaking quite slowly, and I don’t know if she started picking up the pace, or I just acclimatised, but either way I absolutely loved it! Such great imagination!

A big shout-out to the author for creating this new world and for sharing it. It was just what I needed! Thanks MaryJanice! I’m looking forward to going on the rest of this awesome journey with you. X

mostly enjoyable

On the whole this book was entertaining and I enjoyed it, however at times the main character was too much and annoyed me .

Narrator is terrible

Would you try another book written by MaryJanice Davidson or narrated by Nancy Wu?

The narrator is so bad that I couldn't finish listening to this book. everything is said in a sarcastic tone, with far too many raising inflections. so no I wouldn't listen to this narrator again

What could MaryJanice Davidson have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
