About this listen

The uncle in question is Frederick Altamount Cornwallis, Fifth Earl of Ickenham, better known as Uncle Fred, an old boy of such a sunny and youthful nature that explosions of sweetness and light detonate all around him (in the course, it must be said, of a plot that involves blackmail, impersonation, knock-out drops, stealing, arrests and potential jewel-smuggling).

This is Wodehouse at his very best, with sundered lovers, explorers, broke publishers and irascible aristocrats all eventually yielding to the magic, ever-so-slightly-unscrupulous touch of Uncle Fred. It is, as Richard Usborne writes, 'a brilliantly sustained rattle of word-perfect dialogue and narrative topping a very complicated and well-controlled plot'.

How does he do it?

Wodehouse once more takes his mixture of favourite topics (smuggling or stealing diamonds, eccentric English aristocrats, one young American man or woman etc) and blends into a truly original story with all his fabulously original turns of phrase. The only thing missing was an overpowering aunt.

Up there with the best Wodehouse

I hadn’t come across this one before, but I’m so glad I did. A classic Wodehouse; a romcom in the best possible way, smattered with the usual Wodehouse wit and perfect writing. Such a joy.

Laugh out loud

Brilliantly written and read. The usual Woodhouse comedy romp. Great storyline, utterly believable characters. Loved it.

One of his very best.

Wodehouse is on top form and so is Jonathan Cecil. I was smiling most of the time as I listened and laughed out loud on several occasions. Sparkling prose delivered by an excellent narrator.

Fabulous Wodehouse!

Kind, wry humour and splendid, imaginative use of language which, without a doubt, has influenced the best British comedy writers since.

Fast, Furious and Fun

This Wodehouse is ideally suited to being presented in audio-book format. Indeed events often move so quickly a hard-copy of the novel hardly seems adequate. The performance is first class and the voice characterisations are individual and distinctive. Great fun.

Dynamite indeed

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

funny and witty as ever, Wodehouse at his best (again). It never ceases to amaze me that the same basic plots are repeated over and over in Wodehouse and yet they come fresh at you everytime.

Which character – as performed by Jonathan Cecil – was your favourite?

Cecil can do the english local accents wonderfully, even his women sound plausible
