Summary

Best friends Kyle and Sideeq are beginning their first year of college in West London. Sideeq, a talented aspiring artist, spends his time perfecting his artwork and hanging out with his friends while having to learn how to process the harrowing events of his past.

Kyle's ambitions are to become a rapper and a successful businessman. Though the deep bond of friendship formed between Kyle and Sideeq puts them on a path to achieve their dreams, college soon brings with it serious teenage social politics and a bully that terrorises their friend group.

As they navigate new friendships and love interests, will the two boys continue to fortify each other and help each other succeed? Or will the newfound stressors in their lives pull them apart forever?

A modern retelling of Steinbeck's classic Of Mice and Men, Ugly Dogs Don't Cry is a poignant look at intimacy, friendship and masculinity.

Gritty urban story

A very thought-provoking study of how gangs/criminals operate within council estates and how hard it is for young people to keep safe and thrive within those neighbourhoods.

Inner city tale, outstandingly narrated.

This is not my usual book, but spotted it in the plus catalogue and thought I would give the freebie a go.

First half hour I really did not think this was for me, but then it clicked and I got into the London - thing.

The phenomenal narration by Richie Campbell made the words transform into cinematography.

The story set in west London’s with the less than salubrious youth of the area but also some lovely characters, pushing against the constant grime and wanting to better themselves.
Lost lonely souls mixed with the general inner London decay, marvellously woven together in this modern tale

A brilliantly written story of life today…

Ugly dog’s don’t cry, should be required reading in every school. It put a face on all those young men people cross the road to avoid. They are human beings and their lives have value no matter what.

It’s so well written that even if you have no knowledge of this world i the story is gateway in. if you know this world you are not patronised…three words…..just read it

10/10!

After seeing a few negative reviews I was unsure on whether or not this book would be for me, however from the first chapter I was hooked. The performance is incredible, and the narrator gets the London accent spot on.

This book truly tugged on my heartstrings, and had twist and turns I wasn't expecting. I would definitely recommend giving it a try, I wish it had been longer with more detail into each of the characters backgrounds and how they came to be together.

Great coming of age story, emotional & gripping

Beautifully performed. I was in tears by the end. A random tale I picked up as part of the membership offering. So glad I stopped to listen. Very moving and if it makes an impression on even one young person out there it's job is done. Well worth a listen.

WOW

This book made me smile, sadly mostly cry a it reflected my own experiences and awareness that we have such along way to go to elevate our community out of this violence. This could have been written 20 years ago or yesterday. What an amazing read, beautifully read.
