Summary

David Tennant stars as Malvolio in Shakespeare's comedy of disguise, madness and love.

One of Shakespeare's happiest plays, Twelfth Night is both a comedy of misrule and a trenchant attack on puritanism. Disguise and deceit lead to misadventure, madness and mistaken love. Orsino loves Olivia, but she loves Cesario, who really does love Orsino (for Cesario is actually Viola).

But Malvolio believes his mistress, Olivia, loves him, as he is a victim of a trick played on him by those who would make him mad. Naomi Frederick and Paul Ready are Viola and Orsino in his sparkling BBC Radio 3 production.

All round great performance

All parts played as I’d imagined the play. David Tennant is a wonderful Malvolio emoting all of that characters traits and woes!

Much better listening to a play than reading it!

I'm so keen to know Shakespeare 's plays better. With audible I think I've discovered the perfect way to do it.

Twelfth Night

Incredibly entertaining! Tennant's Malvolio is something else. The scenes flow very well into one another, and all the characters are vividly portrayed.

A marvelous Tennant leads an equally fine cast

Even those who don’t consider themselves fans of Shakespeare will enjoy this play/audiobook; the plot for Twelfth Night is easier to follow than many of the bard’s other works, and the play is seasoned with delightful dashes of comedy throughout. The entire cast is super, and Tennant’s Malvolio is an absolute joy.

The overall sound design supports the story well, and the Renaissance music and songs are authentic
and well chosen. (Those much familiar with Early Music may even recognize the songs that various characters sing to themselves, and find themselves singing along.)

I’m very glad to have purchased this particular audiobook; it was well worth my time, and I’ve already gone back for a second listen.
