Summary

Evie Blackwell loves her life as an Illinois state police detective...mostly. She's very skilled at investigations and has steadily moved up through the ranks. She would like to find Mr. Right, but she has a hard time imagining how marriage could work, considering the demands of her job.

Gabriel Thane is a lifetime resident of Carin County and now its sheriff, a job he loves. Gabe is committed to upholding the law and cares deeply for the residents he's sworn to protect. He, too, would like to find a lifetime companion, a marriage like his parents have.

When Evie arrives in Carin, Illinois, it's to help launch a new task force dedicated to reexamining unsolved crimes across the state. Spearheading this trial run, Evie will work with the sheriff's department on a couple of its most troubling missing-person cases. As she reexamines old evidence to pull out a few tenuous new leads, she unearths a surprising connection...possibly to a third cold case.

Evie's determined to solve the cases before she leaves Carin County, and Sheriff Thane, along with his family, will be key to those answers.

Good story but....

Unfortunately the overly sincere voice of the narrator and the overly insightful characters threatened to overwhelm the good story and mystery of this book. I enjoyed it but I had to engage a "filter" to keep from being annoyed by the these issues. If you like Dee Henderson, worth a listen - just a note of caution!

Difficult to put down

I had no idea where the story was going for the first couple of chapters, which is great, made me want to keep reading. Love the unfolding love stories of the three brothers and enjoyed the reviewing of the cold cases. Hope there’s a follow on

Cold cases are never going to be easy...

... but Ditective Evie Blackwell loves a real life puzzle and the satisfaction of solving them. But the Governor has his heart set on getting cold cases cleared up and Eve gets to spend her holiday solving two, as a proof of concept to the planned task force.
These cases are going to be heard on the heart though; a Sheriff's Deputy, his wife and son, missing for 12 years and a 6 year old blue eyed golden haired girl, snached as her family passed through town.
Paul and Ann Falcon get walk on parts as, of course, Ann knows the Sheriff, past and present. Who doesn't she know?!
Though a story complete in itself this follows on from "Taken".

Engaging but godly

There’s some interesting characters and development of narrative, but also quite a lot of references to gods will purpose and faith throughout the narrative which I found jarred with subject matter, but that may just be the atheist in me

Oh Dear

Didn't like the narrator, found the overly complicated story line a pain, as were some of the characters. I found I was zoning g out through a lot of it.
