Summary
A Missing Ferryman. An Undead Dilemma. An Immortal Detective.
An emissary from the Dark Council has just materialized in the office of the Montague & Strong Detective Agency, and makes Simon Strong an offer he can't refuse. Charon is missing. The legendary ferryman responsible for transporting sorcerer souls across the river Styx hasn't been seen in days. And with each passing hour, those unable to cross the river are left to walk among the living, tilting the world further out of balance.
Meet Simon Strong, an immortal, who is also the best private detective in New York City. Together with his surly partner Tristan Montague, a mage of indeterminate age, they must find the Ferryman and get him back to work before another Supernatural War ravages the earth, destroys humanity, and Simon's local coffee shop.
Time is running out. His landlord wants the rent and Karma with a capital K is paying him a visit, and she can be a real....
Join the Montague & Strong Detective Agency and help them locate Charon, so he can restore balance to the universe, put the dead sorcerers to rest, and maybe solve the age-old conundrum - coffee or tea?

Brilliant listen
I really enjoyed this audio book, it's action packed and there is never a dull moment. Only problem is that it's a bit too short and got me wanting more.

Very impressive!
I saw this advertised and thought I would give it a go as it is a genre I like and I was not disappointed! immersive, descriptive and humorous in its dialogue, it is an exception debut novel to a series which I will be eagerly keeping am eye out for in the future! Well done!

Just Brilliant
First time I’ve read (heard) this author and I’m hooked. I read loads and this is The Best. So glad there’s plenty more to feed my found book addiction. 11 out of 10 Stars .

Defying gods are not good for health
Excellent story, very well narrated. When chaos and Khama come to town you know someone will be picking up the pieces. Simon Strong gets the job, and we follow him as he and his friend Monty face down monsters galore as they try to unravel what is actually going on.
Plenty of action and great characters that carry the narrative. Nice to see hints of hidden depths yet to be revealed.
Looking forward to listening to book two.

Good but lacks depth and development
A good start but lacks depth on the plot and of the characters. Too many holes but a good start at fantasy writing. May read the next ones but it will not be a priority.

A lot of writing clichés wrapped up in fantasy
Wasn't a big fan. The reader was alright, but the book wasn't very good.
A book written in the first perspective, it's from the PoV of Simon Strong, an immortal detective who spends a lot of time trying to be aloof and witty, usually at the cost of building a serious moment while falling consistently flat. He has sidekick - a British mage called "Montague", or "Monty" for short (it's very clear from how Montague is written that the writer has spent very little time talking with actual Brits), and a mystical Japanese sword who's origins aren't actually important, so a katana has just been picked for cool factor. He's trying to save the world, because the prophetic human embodiment of Karma has picked him.
The pacing of the book was pretty terrible, truth be told. There's no sense of suspense or build-up - the book refuses at any point to take a breath and slow down. Every scene is crammed with something, usually everyone talking at high speed, or a sort of listless fight that just started from no-where - after three or four of them happening back-to-back, they really lose any sense of meaning or impact. Brawling is just part of the logistics.
I feel one star is too harsh, because it's certainly not the worst book I've ever picked up or read, but it was a really joyless slog to get to chapter 13.
