Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

One of the greatest American novels ever written.

Shoot all the bluejays you want, if you can hit 'em, but remember it's a sin to kill a mockingbird.

A lawyer's advice to his children as he defends the real mockingbird of Harper Lee's classic novel - a black man falsely charged with the rape of a white girl. Through the young eyes of Scout and Jem Finch, Harper Lee explores with exuberant humour the irrationality of adult attitudes to race and class in the Deep South of the 1930s. The conscience of a town steeped in prejudice, violence and hypocrisy is pricked by the stamina of one man's struggle for justice. But the weight of history will only tolerate so much.

To Kill a Mockingbird is a coming-of-age story, an anti-racist novel, a historical drama of the Great Depression and a sublime example of the Southern writing tradition.

Great book, I hate the reading though

I use this as a teacher. The class listen on 120% speed because the reading is so slow. The kids don't even notice it's sped up.

not the classic I was expecting

Couldn't really understand the hype. It was not the classic I imagined. Enjoyable and well narrated. don't think I'd have finished the paperback.

Perfect

I read this book years ago and although I enjoyed it then, somehow listening to this narrator set the tone of the book perfectly. A beautiful story, beautifully narrated.

Superb!

I remember reading and studying this book for GCEs, it was beautiful then and still is. Sissy Spacek narrates it so well that the “ story’s pictures” just hold inside you whilst listening. ...

Classic story, beautifully presented.

This is one book I read every few years, and is the first time I have listened to the story of Atticus, Jem & Scout, the choice of Sissy Spacek as narrator is magnificent and you can feel yourself being transported into the Finches lives, can't recommend highly enough.
