About this listen

Jenny is a lonely university lecturer who's consciousness has traveled back in time to her younger body to try to save the future of the world. A young microbiologist is going to release a genetically modified wheat that will mutate and ultimately destroy all plant life, leaving nothing but barren, windswept dust bowls.

In the past, Jenny finds a love that has been missing from her life - the kind that comes just once in a lifetime. But Jenny can stay in that time period for only 33 days.

Meanwhile, in the future, fearful Jenny will fail, plans are made to send another back in time - an assassin. How can she choose between saving the man she loves and saving the future?

Absolutely loved it

I'm not normally one for romantic literature, even saucy stuff like this. But the story was captivating, I couldn't stop listening and have listened to the whole book in a day. I found myself really routing for the heroine, and the future of mankind at the same time. When you listen to it a second time there's a few extra bits you don't necessarily twig on the first time round. Such a lovely story (although I wasn't keen on the saucy bits) but I enjoyed the book so much I had to keep listening (second time I jumped over those parts). There was a couple of characters introduced it would have been nice to hear about at the end, but it didn't detract from the story that's just my opinion.

A new take on time travel.

Perth, 2049 and 68 years old lecturer and spinster is persuaded to take a drug which, for 33 days, will take her present consciousness back to her own body of 33 years previously. At the end of the allotted time, she would return to her original year and age with no memory of that 33 days. She is the last in a sequence of seven leapers who started in 2247, each returning for 33 days to recruit the next one in line. The aim is to return to a point before a clever young biologist developed and released a new genetically modified strain of wheat which will ultimately infect all plant life with yellow spot, a fatal condition which will destroy all life on earth. As time travel plots go, this is a novel and almost convincing idea.

This could have been an excellent thriller. Unfortunately, it is, instead, a simple romance, well, perhaps not quite simple; after all, how many of us older readers have not occasionally wished to be young again but with the knowledge of our years? However, by returning, Jenny finds the love she'd missed first time around knowing that, when her time was up, not only would she return to her original age but would also forget those precious 33 days. The story was read by Geoffrey Boyes, whose slight Australian accent did not in any way intrude and who was c!ear and well modulated throughout, although his character voicings seemed erratic. It was also easier to enjoy with playback speed increased to 1.25.

My thanks to the rights holder of Thirty-Three Days, who, at my request freely gifted me with a complimentary copy. An intriguing fresh take on time travel but this is really only a vehicle for a soft porn love story and not for those looking for S.F.or thriller action..

too much romance

As a great lover of time travel books I was looking forward to listening to this book but was frustrated at the amount of dialogue spent describing the ongoing relationship between the two main characters. the main storyline was ok but just seemed to be padded out with a load of romantic drivel. It was so annoying I almost didn't finish the book on a number of occasions but stuck with in case it improved. it didn't!
