About this listen
As well as offering an engaging and insightful account of a 40-year career spent in the upper echelons of the diplomatic and political worlds (and which included four years in pre-revolutionary Iran in addition to his 14 years in Turkey, France and the USA), They Call It Diplomacy sets out to explain what diplomats actually do; mounts a vigorous defence of the continuing relevance of the diplomat in an age of instant communication, social media and special envoys; and details what Westmacott sees as some of the successes of recent British diplomacy.
A committed Internationalist, Westmacott offers trenchantly Europhile views on the Brexit referendum and its aftermath and voices his concerns about Britain's ability to continue to bring its influence to bear on the wider world now that it has left the European Union.

Excellent account of a fascinating career
I thoroughly enjoyed the amazing insight into the life of a career diplomat. It is an honest and candid account of the life of a British ambassador in Turkey, France and the US.
This is an enlightening mix of politics and modern history. It is a particular privilege to hear the views of someone on some of the more complex political trends in our time - Trump, Brexit and the interrelationships between religion and politics in many parts of the world.

Excellent insight into international diplomacy
Peter Westmacott gives a fantastic description of 40 years working in British diplomacy. He explains his career in detail in many international locations such as Turkey, France and the United States. Peter describes in detail the political and professional relationships he established while being involved in some of the most interesting international events of the past half century, and clearly describes the need for international cultural and political understanding between nations. He explains clearly Britain,'s role in the world's international diplomacy and relations, and questions what Britain's role will be in the world moving into the future. A must-read book / Audible (I have both) if you are interested in current politics, diplomacy and international relations.
