Summary

"You could not have made me the offer of your hand in any possible way that would have tempted me to accept it."

His proposal of marriage to the lovely, but socially inferior, Elizabeth Bennet thoroughly rejected, Darcy must come to terms with her evaluation of his character and a future without her.

Book Three, These Three Remain, recounts Darcy's painful journey of self-discovery in his quest to become the gentleman he always hoped he would be and the kind of man of whom Elizabeth Bennet would approve.

A chance meeting with her during a tour of his estate in Derbyshire offers Darcy a new opportunity, but the activities of his nemesis, George Wickham, interfere once more in a way that may ruin everyone's hopes for happiness, unless Darcy succeeds in putting his new-found strengths to the test.

Setting the story vividly against the colorful, historical, and political background of the Regency, Aidan writes in a style comfortably at home with Jane Austen, but with a wit and humor very much her own. Aidan adds her own cast of fascinating characters to those in Austen's original, weaving a rich tapestry from Darcy's past and present.

Generally enjoyable

I enjoyed the detailed background given here to Jane Austen's book. It certainly helped my understanding of the search for Wickham and Lydia, but sometimes Darcy's introspection felt a little heavy handed, and made the story move too slowly.

I just loved it!

I think this is my favourite of the three novels of 'Fitzwilliam Darcy - Gentleman'.

Like another reviewer, I think you could miss part two and go straight on to this without missing too much.

****SPOILER ALERT****
I think one of my favourite scenes is Darcy confessing all about Eizabeth to a friend whilst getting extremely drunk in the process. It's not what you might expect from Austen herself, but in the end, the man is human and has recently had a very severe putdown from the woman he loves. I have to admit to smiling a lot throughout that part due to the way it's written.

Obviously, there's no surprises in the ending. We wouldn't be listening to this if we didn't know the story, but it's very well told indeed.

More stories about Mr & Mrs Darcy's life as custodians of Pemberley would be very welcome and I'd dearly like to know how things work out for Georgiana in the future if Pamela Aidan is thinking of carrying that story on.

All in all - my favourite listen of the past two or three years!

The Golden Thread❣️

This trilogy is both well written and well read. It provides an insight into the growth of Darcy into the gentleman finally worthy of Elizabeth’s hand with intriguing subplots and an introduction of new characters such as Dye and an honorary mention to Fletcher the valet. Highly recommend.

Austen For Blokes

There's little actual violence in the three books but I can't help but compare Fitzwilliam Darcy with another well loved fictional character-James Bond. In the previous novel Aiden sets up a scene where Darcy comes into it dressed to kill, surrounded by danger on all sides and has to play a card game for a valued prize.

In the second half of this book he finds himself having to enlist the help of an organization he doesn't really trust but purportes itself to be something like the present day MI5. In order to win a prize he values more than anything else. He fears it all will most likely go horribly wrong but armed with his not inconsiderable wit and personal fortune he enters the fray.

I therefore commend this trilogy to those like me who aren't 100% interested in the goings on in the Bennet household but do want to hear the tale of how a man battles both others and the consequences of his own foolish deeds and emotional problems to try and win the love of an incredible woman.

Darcy Becomes A Better Man

I have read all three books in the Novel and very much enjoyed this one. The Author gives us a wonderful insight into the character and lifestyle of Mr Darcy. She leads us through his joy and pain, as he strives to become a better man and win Elizabeth's heart. A thrilling listen for any Pride and Prejudice fan.
