About this listen
Brought to you by Penguin.
This Penguin Classic is performed by acclaimed British actor Tim McInnerny, known for his many roles on stage and screen including in Notting Hill and Blackadder. This definitive edition includes an introduction by Matthew Sweet.
The Woman in White famously opens with Walter Hartright's eerie encounter on a moonlit London road. Engaged as a drawing master to the beautiful Laura Fairlie, Walter is drawn into the sinister intrigues of Sir Percival Glyde and his 'charming' friend Count Fosco, who has a taste for white mice, vanilla bonbons and poison. Pursuing questions of identity and insanity along the paths and corridors of English country houses and the madhouse, The Woman in White is the first and most influential of the Victorian genre that combined Gothic horror with psychological realism.

Brilliant
This makes a thrilling listen. Collins reveals himself to be a gifted writer in storytelling, plot character and style, and Tim McInnerny a gifted reader. His voice is modulated and clear and his inhabiting of character and adoption of all manner of accents as thrilling as the story itself.
