Summary

When the Water Rat invites the unassuming Mole to spend his first day ever in a boat on the river, and wise Badger comes along for the ride as well, so begins a marvellous season of adventure for the three friends. Mr Toad (he of Toad Hall) completes a happy foursome, but his tendency to get into hot water leads him into some rather hair-raising scrapes of his own.

From an idyllic riverside picnic to a snowy encounter in the Wild Wood, and from poop-pooping in Toad's shiny new motor car to battling the massed ranks of Stoats, Weasels, and Ferrets in a battle for Toad Hall, there's never a dull moment when they are all together!

In his own inimitable style, Alan Bennett gives voice to each and every character in Kenneth Grahame's beguiling novel.

Just how I remember it.

My Sister bought me this for my birthday as it is the version we used to listen to as children ans it's just how I remember it. As you would expect it is very well performed by Alan Bennett and it made me very nostalgic. Definitely one for children of the 80’s and 90s.

A funny, heartwarming tale brought to life

Alan Bennett reads this story perfectly. He gets all the characters just right. I laughed out loud many times and fell in love with Kenneth Grahame's perfectly lovable characters. I can't recommend the Wind in the Willows enough, to children and adults alike. It's life affirming.

The definitive version!

The Wind in the Willows is one of the greatest ever children's classics (with 'Alice', 'Pooh','Tom Sawyer', 'Narnia' and 'the Hobbit'. OK, there are others.....), although it has been accused of sentimentality, anthropomorphism and even of class distinction! Forget all that - it's wonderful: beautifully written, romantic, funny and exciting, with animal heroes more real than many humans. And this reading is the best on the market- Bennett is gentle, dry, whimsical and as appealing to adults as he is to very small children. If you're looking for the definitive reading, to take children from baby books through to literature, this is the one. My own daughter listened to it from age four, and came home from her post-graduate college recently shouting 'Where's my tape of Wind in the Willows?'

Great for sleep

I loved the Wind in the Willows as a child, and when I experienced sleep problems as an adult and someone suggested an audio book I decided to give this a try along with some more grown up books. Bennett's voice is relaxing, there are no sudden changes in volume, and he reads at a good pace. I haven't cured my sleep problems but I find I can relax and enjoy the story, often falling asleep by the time Mole and Rat are breakfasting with Badger - the voice for Badger is my personal favourite 😊

Forgotten memories

Read this in my youth. Read to my sons & they loved it too. Now enjoying Alan Bennets dulcet tones reading to me!
Love the characterisation & tempo.
PS my youngest son, now a grown up actor is playing Otter at Kew.
