Summary

An action-packed flintlock fantasy audiobook about guns, mages, bards, and dragons!

Ulric, former war hero, has been living a quiet life of exile in the frontier city of Quinport and wants only to continue hiding from the mistakes of his past. But then he discovers the invention of a revolutionary new kind of rifle, and worse, the ruling Coalition discovers his identity.

Enter Dellioph, no mere bard, who just arrived to Quinport and wants only to play his music and to keep his secrets. But trying to do both lands him directly in the path of one of the Coalition chancellors, who wants to use Dellioph and his secrets. Dellioph must choose to keep his secrets, his freedom, or his music. But when the choice is between anything and his music, it’s no choice at all.

And Gali, future chief of the one of the Teo tribes, who wants nothing more than to save her people, even if that means forcing them to change. She disobeys her father, lies to her people, and travels to the Coalition city to learn how to do some of the things they do—making and using muskets foremost among them. But the people of the Coalition are not ready to accept the Teo, and Gali will be forced to learn the hard way that a renegade’s only friend is another renegade.

Meanwhile, two mysterious strangers from opposite sides of the world come hunting a sorcerer who has unbelievable power, a hunger for more, and dragons, but they are nothing like the stories.

This managed to draw me in from the start

Lots of people are saying this is like Joe Abercrombie. I think it kinda different in style not as funny the world building is excellent however and I enjoyed it all the way through. Steven Pacy is of course excellent which helps alot, I can't wait for book two now.

Love it and looking forward to the next instalment. I had no idea that this story was the first title by maestro wall! I’d really like to see him achieve every accolade for providing such entertainment and company. Thank you and well done sir 👏

Very good listen.

Picked it up because it had a magical sentence for me: “Narrated by Steven Pacey.”
But I enjoyed the story also, eventhough I must wait for the 2nd and 3rd installment for some time. The 1st one was more of “setting the pieces on the board” kind of book, but nevertheless, quite enjoyable.

What a great debut! I couldn’t stop listening!

I highly recommend this book. If you like the work of Joe Abercrombie, Patrick Rothfuss, amongst other fantasy authors, you may find that Steve D. Wall leaves nothing wanting.

It is a gripping well written piece with good characters and set in a story world that isn’t bloated with names, descriptions or complex relationships.

Structure and pace are good and gripping, characters are well developed and overall a very immersive experience. Not once I had to go back to try and figure out what a name or a place meant. Everything falls into place nicely.

Steve D. Wall’s first book feels very mature and I can’t wait for what he’ll write next!

First ever review

absolutely brilliant. I never usually purchase an audio book that has got at least a few hundred good reviews but gave it a go and I'm SO glad I did

Good humour, interesting characters and good narration

Brilliant book with a fair bit of mystery to it. You can clearly see the new frontier inspiration, and the author manages to make a story heard many times interesting through convincing characters, a bit of mystery and of course music.
