Summary
A Warhammer 40,000 novel.
In a brief respite between wars, Gaunt's Ghosts find themselves facing a hidden killer on a newly liberated world.
Listen to it because....
Witness a never-before-seen tale from the confidential Ghost dossier, following one of the earliest deployments for the Tanith First and Only.
The story:
In the ruined border town of Vincula, the newly formed Tanith First and Only and their commander, Colonel-Commissar Ibram Gaunt, are assigned to enforce a permanent peace. However, this thankless police action will prove as dangerous as any frontline—something is stalking the Ghosts through the streets, and soon the Tanith First will learn dark secrets about themselves that will echo through their history.
Written by Dan Abnett. Running time 6 hours 8 minutes. Narrated by Toby Longworth.

Abnett love note.
This is great. I love these characters but so does Dan Abnett. Here he gets to revisit and expand some of our old friends. And due to Longworth's typically peerless narration, they really are.

amazingly entertaining.
Dan loves slipping in esoteric symbolism in his stories. Always wonderfully detailed. Absolutely brilliant story. I cannot wait for the next installment.

Throwback for the First & Only
This was an incredible return to the earliest days of Gaunt's Ghosts with returning characters to-boot. The story is structured and paced exceptionally well and provides a deep, cultural dive into Tanith as a planet and people. Toby Longworth maintains his own high standard of character voices throughout and makes for a compelling short tale which reveals much about our favourite characters. The mystery at the end leads to many questions, hopefully answered in a second installment or in the greater Gaunt's Ghosts storyline as a whole.

Back to black (and Bragg)
Also back in the Triassic period waiting for Friday football to start, I remember reading the very first Ghost novel in the car park outside - and thinking how fine indeed it was.
A fan ever since, and through the decades have followed Dan's maturity as a military sci-fi writer, with more character development and higher echelon input. After all, it's on the strategic level, not the tactical, that you win campaigns.
This book works well in the combination of Dan's trademark action sequences and now polished character development.
Ex military myself - the parallels with Iraq and Afghanistan is obvious.
I attended a Black Library weekender a few years ago in Nottingham, and much to my regret, when Dan put it out to the audience what city the conflict in The Warmaster reminded us of, only a Simpson's comic store guy proffered a rather pretentious 'Constantinople'.
No mate. Small unit action with automatic weapons fighting through houses against each other other with flapping sheets outside the buildings acting as anti-sniper devices is obviously taken from Stalingrad.
Is what I should have said...
