Summary

George Orwell (1903-1950) was an English novelist, essayist, journalist, and critic, best known for the allegorical novella Animal Farm (1945) and the dystopian novel 1984 (1949). Animal Farm is Orwell's classic satire of the Russian Revolution. The farm animals rise up against Farmer Jones and transform the Manor Farm into Animal Farm, an egalitarian society built on the credo that All Animals Are Created Equal. In 1984, the protagonist, Winston Smith ,wrestles with oppression in Oceania, a state where the Party scrutinizes every human action with Big Brother. Defying a ban on individualism, Winston expresses his thoughts in a diary and pursues a relationship with his colleague, Julia. These criminal acts bring Winston to the attention of Big Brother.

Brilliant book spoiled by narration

Awful American attempt at a cockney accent constantly irritates and spoils what would otherwise be a good narration. Pace and mood of the delivery is perfect but because the story is set in London, every time a character of the proletariat speaks it makes it sound like a bad comedy.

Spoilt by the Americanism.

Was revisiting these books. The narration was fine until it came to the dialogue. Julia sounded like a member of the Famous Five. I would prefer a classic English book to be read by an English person, not an American (and vice versa). The sudden insertion of words like "diaper" were incongruous and the narrator sounds like he attended the Dick Van Dyke school of English accents. Gutted to have the Stephen Fry version offered just as I had finished listening. Will make sure I sample in future.
