About this listen

Poppy Carew, smarting and in shock because her live-in lover has left her for a richer woman, is called to the bedside of her dying father, a wonderful, loveable eccentric who dies laughing. He asks as his last request that he be buried in style by an undertaker who specialises in fun funerals. He also astonishes Poppy by leaving her a large sum of money.

As news of her good fortune spreads, other friends of friends, acquaintances of her dead father (who appears to have made his fortune by being nice to old ladies) and, not least, her ex-lover emerge. Suddenly there are too many choices for Poppy Carew.

Heavily abridged

Not sure why it needed to be abridged and in particular a storyline involving Calypso from the Chamomile Lawn was hacked out. Rather disappointed.

revisiting Mary Wesley

after a great number of years is sheer lighthearted delight. Anna Massey was wonderful as the narrator which doubled the book's charm

A favourite Book destroyed.

This unusual brilliant story has unfortunately been abridged soo much
and to my deep annoyance parts of the story altered by words not in the original book.
What a cheek !
I’ve read the book many times , was cross to hear added parts that are definitely not Mary Wesley’s story .
Don’t wast your money ,
The reader , Anna Massey is always very good .
But this particular story needs all the words , or it’s totally meaningless.
Not recommended.
