About this listen
Coming from opposite worlds, what could possibly unite them?
Rejected, frustrated, and no longer confident about God's plan for his life, John Sweet takes a year-long assignment in Atlanta, Georgia. The city is bustling with preparations for the Cotton States and International Exposition to be held in the autumn of 1895. Sarah Fuller is also new to the city but is trying desperately to make a home for her lonely father and motherless little sister. When a special assignment for the Exposition puts John and Sarah in close contact, they discover that while their pasts are completely different, their future dreams are much the same. As their families create obstacles and opposition, will they be able to find a way forward together?
At Christmas 1945, with her family still reeling from the changes brought by World War II, Grandma Sarah tells her teenage granddaughter about the year that changed her life. Can her simple story bring the healing and perspective they both need to embrace a different future than they had planned?
This stand-alone Christmas prequel to the Sorrow and Song trilogy will transport you back to a Victorian Christmas, when the world was very different, yet the same longing for peace and purpose resounded in every heart.

OK
A Nice book, although I wouldn't necessarily call it a Christmas book. Christmas is a small part of it towards the end though. I liked the characters and I liked the way Sarah's Father changed since John came on the scene.
There was a lot of historical information in this book which I appreciated, also the Christian aspect. I'd like to read the rest of the series some time. The Narrator for audible was good.

Unpredictable and heartwarming
What a wonderful story this was. I've heard great things about Jennifer Q. Hunt's books, and I expected it to be a good romance story, which it was. I thought it would end where the typical romance novel ends, with the couple getting married. But it got so much better. The final third or so of the story that depicts Sarah and John's early married life was where this story truly elevated itself into something special.
It's clear that the author is well-versed in the historical period, settings, and themes she writes about. I especially appreciated the nuanced approach to complicated social, political, and religious issues.
John and Sarah really grew on me as the story progressed, and I loved seeing how they both matured, learning wonderful lessons along the way. I would love to hear more about Sullivan and Jim, Helen and Mrs. Fuller, and find out whether there was any redemption for Lois. The fact that I got so invested in these supporting characters is testament to the strength of Mrs Hunt's writing. I truly feel as though they have "lives" off the page!
This is a book I'll be listening to over again.

Christian Historical Romance
As is the opening scene in this story, I too have a Japanese family member. My Aunt married my Uncle and came to America after WWII. I always thought my grandmother was an incredible woman to have welcomed her (my Aunt) with open arms! So this story pulled me in right away! I loved their courtship and romance and thought this was a brilliant story!
I thought the narration needed some work though. Especially their Scottish friend. His voice is ridiculous. She seemed to get the Irish ladies fairly accurate though.
