Summary
Brought to you by Penguin.
'I've written three books and our deal is over.' That's what reluctant author Anthony Horowitz tells ex-detective Daniel Hawthorne in an awkward meeting. The truth is that Anthony has got other things on his mind.
His new play, a thriller called Mindgame, is about to open at the famous Vaudeville theatre in Shoreditch. Not surprisingly, Hawthorne declines a ticket to the opening night.
The play is not enjoyed by the critics. In particular, Sunday Times critic Harriet Throsby gives it a savage review, focusing particularly on the writing. The next day, Throsby is stabbed in the heart with an ornamental dagger, which, it turns out, belongs to Anthony, and which has his fingerprints all over it.
Anthony is arrested by an old enemy...Detective Inspector Cara Grunshaw. She's still smarting from her failure to solve the case described in the second Hawthorne adventure: The Sentence Is Death. She blames Anthony for her failure. And now she's out for revenge.
Thrown into prison and brutally interrogated, Anthony is the prime suspect in Throsby's murder, and as a second theatre critic is found to have died in mysterious circumstances, the net closes in. Ever more desperate, he realizes that only one man can help him.
But will Hawthorne take the call?

excellent, as always
sorry in advance for the lack of capital letters in this review - I'm voice typing it and it doesn't always capitalise the beginnings of sentences! shock, horror.
I adore this series. Anthony Horowitz rights with such pace, humour and intelligence. the developing relationship between Anthony and detective Hawthorne is a delight to behold and we are at the point in the series now where recurring jokes are welcome - Hawthornes dismissive, casually insulting treatment of Anthony just makes me warm to the author even more.
I'm certain this question has been asked from the very beginning but I do wonder - how much of the events in the book are real? I could dive in to read it or something to read the general consensus but I think I'll enjoy coming to my own conclusions more. in the word is murder, book one, I believed it was entirely factual until about 2/3 of the way through. in books 2 and 3 I smiled to myself every time I asked the question again - is this really real??? I concluded that it's probably got details based on fact but that much of the plot is fictional... to my delight, this book made me doubt that conclusion once again!
if I was forced to compare this series to food I would compare it to a Colin the Caterpillar cake from marks and Spencer's- it's very moorish, fun, but classy.

Lived up to expectation
I had pre-ordered this, having thoroughly enjoyed the first books. This didn't disappoint! Anthony Horowitz manages to come up each time with a totally unique angle and story, keeping you hooked to the very end. I was only disappointed when it was over - as now I have to wait for the next instalment.

Love this series
Brilliantly written and superbly narrated. Love the concept of the author as a character in his own books. The Hawthorn character is one of the greats.

Nice one Tony and Hawthorne
What an absolute pleasure this series is. This book is so cleverly conceived and executed. I relished every minute. I love the narration but I prefer it on 0.9 and that draws out the pleasure too. Can’t wait for more…

The best one yet!
I started reading/listening to Horowitz after the Bond books which, incidentally he does a phenomenal job of imitating Fleming’s writing style in, especially the first two.
Anyway, this book is gripping! It has just enough real life to make you question did this really happen… Think Arthur Conan Doyle’s Holmes and George MacDonald Fraser’s Flashman.
Thank you for this brilliant audio book.

May the journey continue…
Book 4 of…? Never disappoints and is hard to put down. Having listened to the Word is Murder with my wife, I’m now in future trouble when the truth will be revealed that I have listened to further 3 on my own! I’m currently looking for someone to blame.
