Summary
A whirlwind fantasy classic set in the richest world imaginable, with unforgettable characters and the highest stakes – The Time of the Dark is the first book in Barbara Hambly’s epic Darwath Trilogy.
Gil Patterson is a woman familiar with dark stories.
As a student of medieval history, she knows the Crusades, the Black Death, and the horrors of life in the Middle Ages. But it is another kind of darkness has begun to stalk her dreams: when she falls asleep she sees forces of evil assaulting a beleaguered kingdom, whose kind people are on the brink of annihilation, and awakes each morning in a cold sweat.
Gil dismisses the dreams until a wizard appears in her apartment. He has crossed into her dimension, passing through the fraying fabric of the universe, to ask her help. For mankind to survive he must protect an infant prince, whom he plans to hide in Gil's world. The student of history is about to get much closer to evil than she ever imagined.

Pretty Good
I like the concept of a modern person (or 2) being put into a different age, time and place, to see how they manage. Brilliantly read.

Classic fantasy with an excellent reader
I'm a longtime fan of Barbara Hambly's fantasy work, and I was deeply disappointed by the earlier Audible version of this book. This version, however, is excellent, and this reader does a really good job which I thoroughly enjoyed listening to. The Darwarth Trilogy, of which this is the first book, is a classic fantasy work in which 2 misfits from this world find themselves transported to another in which they find meaningful lives. So far, so hackneyed. But Hambly does it really well. She is an intelligent, knowledgeable writer with a real talent for characterisation and dialogue, and the long struggle of humans against the monstrous Dark Ones is unfailingly engrossing and really unnerving.
I'm really pleased to see that the other 2 parts of the trilogy have been re-recorded, and hope that Hambly's Sun Wolf and Star Hawk books will also be recorded by this reader.

Colourless
I’ve started this book three times hoping I was going to enjoy it based upon other reviews, and the fact that Kristen Atherton (listen to The Invisible Library books) is the narrator. Sadly I simply can’t get into it. The characters are devoid of personality, there is too much endless verbiage about stink and filth, and the story seems grey and sludgy. Simply because Kristen Atherton Is such a great narrator I might give it one more go, but on the other hand I probably won’t bother!
