Summary

From the creator of Falco comes Falco: The New Generation, featuring her unforgettable heroine Flavia Albia.

Flavia Albia's day-old marriage is in trouble - her new husband may be permanently disabled, and they have no funds. So when Palace officials ask her to help expose a plotter in their midst, she is obliged to accept their commission.

The plot could not be bigger. Ever since he died in AD 68, apparently by his own hand, Rome has been haunted by reports that Emperor Nero is in fact very much alive and about to return to claim his throne.

Two Nero pretenders have emerged in the east and met grisly fates. But now, as Emperor Domitian, whose tyrannical, paranoid reign grows ever more unpopular, fights a war in faraway Dacia, there emerges a far more sinister contender. What's more the rumour is that this false Nero is already in Rome. Plunged into the conspiracy, Flavia must infiltrate the house of the Parthians who have smuggled in this new impostor, negotiate with spies, dodge the assassins sent by the Palace traitor, and somehow cope with her stricken husband.

Can she succeed before the impostor is revealed? Or will Rome once more be plunged into civil war?

l Lindsey Davis does it again!!!

Poor Favia.Albia husband struck by lightening on her wedding day and then the palace spys come calling. This is the start of a roller coaster story
that is a joy to listen to. Lucy Brown sounds very much like I imagined Flavia to speak.

back on top

Another exciting job for Flavia Alba. This narrator is brilliant and has the character of Flavia completely allowing the Listener to fall into the world of the Roman informer and her Aedile once again for another exciting episode of the story .

Everything an Historical Rendition should be!

Lindsey Davis has woven a superb, gripping story. Lucy Brown provides a matching excellent narration.

I miss the falcon humour

Although well read the Flavia series does not have charm of the Falco series. An easy listen though.

excellent narration

Great series. This one seemed rather drawn out. Roman names more confusing in audio version. In writing it's clearer to distinguish the characters. Often a helpful map too. The narration was really good.

Great listen

Excellent, slow at first but finished at a pace. Loved the way it progressed from something minor and ended with a major result.

It's getting there

I'm slowly getting into the new style with Flavia as the main character, however while Lucy Brown is no doubt trying her best the voice does not quite seem right, still a bit 'jolly hockey sticks' at times, and hardly a street wise woman.

brilliant story

I like this narrator better than the other one. the story complicated by lots of carrictors and names to remember.

Really enjoyable and engaging

I do live a Falco family book and this was a great one. Thoroughly enjoyable and gripping. My only caveat is the microphone picked up a lot of extraneous mouth noises from the reader so sometimes it became very distracting.
