About this listen
From the #1 Kickstarter campaign of all time—#1 New York Times bestselling author Brandon Sanderson adds to his Cosmere universe shared by Mistborn and The Stormlight Archive with a new standalone novel that combines fantasy and science fiction. Narrated by William DeMeritt.
Running. Putting distance between himself and the relentless Night Brigade has been Nomad’s strategy for years. Staying one or two steps ahead of his pursuers by skipping through the Cosmere from one world to the next.
But now, his powers too depleted to escape, Nomad finds himself trapped on Canticle, a planet that will kill anyone who doesn’t keep moving. Fleeing the fires of a sunrise that melts the very stones, he is instantly caught up in the struggle between a heartless tyrant and the brave rebels who defy him.
Failure means a quick death, incinerated by the sun…or a lifetime as a mindless slave. Tormented by the consequences of his past, Nomad must fight not only for his survival—but also for his very soul.
Note from Brandon:
I sincerely believe that stories don’t live until they’re heard. While I would write even if no one were listening—it’s who I am—I thrive because I know the stories are being brought to life by all of you. In this, stories are a special kind of art. Each of you will visualize this book, and its characters, a little differently—you will each put your own stamp on it, making it yours. I don’t believe a story is quite finished until that has happened—until the dream in my head has become a reality (even if briefly) in yours.
And so this book is yours, as they all are once you listen to them. Thank you so much for bringing life to my work, and to the Cosmere.

His best novella for the stormlight world!
A great listen. Really shows a future for the cosmere. The main character progression was at a nice pace and finished well. Also adds to the lore from the stormlight archive and the structure of the cosmere in regards to investiture etc. Probably you should read it before book 5 of the stormlight archive.

I nearly stopped after 30 minutes but I'm glad I didn't
I almost stopped listening after 30 minutes—not because the narration was bad, but simply because I struggled to connect with it at first. Most of the Cosmere books have been narrated by the same two performers, and since the main character has appeared in other books, the change in pacing and tone felt jarringly different. It took me a while to adjust, but once I did, I had to admit that the performance was brilliant. The story itself was another excellent Cosmere tale from Sanderson, and in the end, I really enjoyed the book.

Too much mysterious backstory
Too much unknown backstory for my taste. Unsure if it’s because I need to read more of the Stormlight Archive or whether Sanderson just wrote it this way, with lots of «mystery». If this is not meant to be read as s stand-alone, that would have been useful to know beforehand.
Good book, though. Sanderson always delivers on the worldbuilding.

5* ofcourse
love this narrator, I think he does a great job, but he always makes me think of narrators in old P.I. films.
solid story with so many tidbits for wider cosmere lore.

One for the Cosmere fans
Brandon Sanderson said that he wrote this book for the fans of his Cosmere. While it does hold it's own as a standalone novel, it does contain a lot of Cosmere references and would probably be enjoyed a little more by people that have read more of his Cosmere work. Unlike one of the other reviews here, I would recommend that if you wish to read the Stormlight Archive and this book, that you leave it until AFTER Wind and Truth even though it was published first of the two. While it doesn't give large spoilers as such, it is set in a later time period and will tell you what some of the characters in the Stormlight Archive are doing in the future. Many characters are in mortal danger by the end of the Stormlight Archive, and knowing in advance that some will definitely survive to be in this book might spoil things for some people.
I loved the story and the narration wasn't awful. I did feel a slight disconnect having a different narrator from the rest of Sanderson's work although I suspect it was intentional for plot reasons. I reduced my rating for the performance mainly for the reason that one of the main characters is explained as speaking in a dull monotone with no variance in pitch or expression (which is essential to the plot) and the narrator chose to give it an accent that was definitely not monotonous and made the words difficult to understand at times.

A brilliant quick dip back into the Cosmere
A wonderful and enjoyable quick jump back into the Cosmere. No spoilers but I cheered at one point. Thanks Brandon.

good Cosmere novella, read it after wind and truth, I dont like the narrator , I can't understand him
good Cosmere novella, read it after wind and truth though. I couldn't get to like the narration , I am too used to Michael Kramer and the accent he put up for auxiliary is frustrating as I can't grasp what he says most.ofbthe times

Never really engaged with this story
Sanderson is one of my all-time favourite authors. I also loved the other 3 books in this series (all 5 stars) but unfortunately I never warmed to this story or the characters. I persevered to the end in the hopes it would strike me!
