About this listen
"A proper twisty thriller."—Sarah Pinborough
A stranger has infiltrated your family…and now he’s taking over.
Paul’s just here to help, or so he claims—sent by a charity for vulnerable people to do odd jobs for elderly widow Gwen. But for Gwen’s daughter Connie, there’s just something about Paul that rings alarm bells from day one. He’s a little too kind, a little too involved…Worse still, Gwen seems to have fallen under his spell.
The last thing Connie wants is a stranger meddling in the safe routine she’s built around Gwen. She loves being the one Gwen turns to for cooking, cleaning and company. But the more Paul visits, the more Gwen is relying on him. By the time he conveniently finds himself between homes and has no choice but to move in, Connie is certain he’s trying to push her out completely.
It’s her word against his, though, and as her attempts to unmask him become ever more desperate she’s not the only one left wondering if she’s lost her grip on reality. But when events start spiralling rapidly out of her control, should Connie wage all-out war on Paul and risk losing Gwen forever—or has that been his plan all along?

“Though not yet a household name, Marrs is an incredibly talented storyteller with a built-in audience who knows what he can do. When unfamiliar readers get their hands on this one, they’ll want more.”—Booklist
“I inhaled this book. A novel of second guesses, of mistrustful characters and downright terrifying ones. An absolute ride of a thriller. I loved it.”—L. V. Matthews, author of The Twins and The Silent Waters

Plot twists were great!
The voices were really irritating! Took away from a good story. Not my favourite from Marrs but an interesting story.

Twist and turns between Connie and Meredith
I loved this book, it’s the first time I have listened to one of John marrs books but I throughly enjoyed it.

Story line
There was nothing I didn't like. I am just typing this because there is a fifteen word minimum which is ridiculous.

Shocking narration
Brilliant story but the most irritating narration by all the artists. The upper class accent of the main character jarred with her background and personality. As for the other characters, the narration was so robotic that at times it felt as though I was being read to by Alexa. Such a shame as the book was really good, with lots of twists and turns.

Why were the narrators playing such different styles?
I have absolutely no idea why the second actress was hamming everything up in a very unnatural voice for all of her characters. I’m sure she’d be great for comedy or character work but for me, she wasn’t believable or genuine in the context of this novel and that led to my disconnect from the truth of the storyline.

Another John Marrs hit
A gripping read/listen. Shame about the woman doing the posh voices. That was a bit over the top and off putting to begin with, but not the end of the world. I got used to it. The rest of the narration was superb. As I’ve come to expect from John Marrs, the story has more twists and turns than a twisty turny thing. Recommended!

Twists and turns
An interesting concept with dark undertones! Just when I felt some empathy with a character, there would be more information which altered my view!
Overall I disliked almost everyone!
The swapping of narrators to represent different characters was clumsily done and unecessary. The main female narrator was good, but the pathetic performance of the woman voicing the social worker and of Meredith, who both sounded the same, was cringingly bad! The tone was inappropriately condescending which misrepresented what was actually being said!
I have really enjoyed other books by this author, but he failed to really explain adequately why the main male character was as psychologically damaged as his bizarre actions indicated.
I have many years of experience working with sufferers of dementia and Marrs portrayal of both service users and support services was very poorly researched in my opinion!
Still worth a read, but maybe not a listen and certainly not one to base any judgements on!

Plenty of tension!
John Marrs to my mind is one of the best at domestic thrillers. This is well written, with twists and turns and scary bits. I didn’t predict the end until the penultimate chapter. But I didn’t like the ending. Maybe it depends where your sympathies lie once you’ve heard most of the story. Or maybe it was because of the voice given to a particular character, that made her sound very unpleasant. She could have been read differently, and I feel she sounds about 30 years younger. On the whole, though, the narration was good.
The main character sounds a bit wet to start with. I hovered between being irritated by her and wondering if this just wasn’t going to be a good book. But now I think she was written perfectly. Sometimes I wanted to shake her. Other times I wanted to take her under my wing. I grew to like her, even though she constantly made stupid decisions.
I would recommend this book, and I’ll read even more by John Marrs

Fabulous twists and turns
John is one of my favourite authors and I have read all of his books. I absolutely loved the plot twists and turns in this one. Great characters all with an agenda and a secret which was fab! Excellent narration with clear distinguishable characters. Loved it!

Disappointing last third
I devour anything this man writes. Felt like it lost momentum towards the end.
