Summary
The Sunday Times Top Five Bestseller
A BBC Two Between the Covers Book Club Pick
'A wonderfully inventive novel' — The Times and Sunday Times, Best Historical Fiction of 2023
Laura Shepherd-Robinson's The Square of Sevens is an epic and sweeping novel set in Georgian high society, a dazzling story offering up mystery, intrigue, heartbreak, and audacious twists.
This is your story, Red. You must tell it well . . .
A girl known only as Red, the daughter of a Cornish fortune-teller, travels with her father making a living predicting fortunes using the ancient method: the Square of Sevens. When her father suddenly dies, Red becomes the ward of a gentleman scholar.
Now raised as a lady amidst the Georgian splendour of Bath, her fortune-telling is a delight to high society. But she cannot ignore the questions that gnaw at her soul: who was her mother? How did she die? And who are the mysterious enemies her father was always terrified would find him?
The pursuit of these mysteries takes her from Cornwall and Bath to London and Devon, from the rough ribaldry of the Bartholomew Fair to the grand houses of two of the most powerful families in England. And while Red's quest brings her the possibility of great reward, it also leads her into grave danger . . .
'A masterpiece' — Janice Hallett, bestselling author of The Appeal
'A sweeping Dickensian tour de force of a novel' — Susan Stokes-Chapman, bestselling author of Pandora
'I doubt I’ll read a better book this year' — Chris Whitaker, bestselling author of We Begin at the End

A wonderful surprise!
I bought this on a whim never having heard of it before, but I loved it! Really tightly plotted, rich with historical detail and possessing a few twists that I didn't guess (and normally I do!)

What a plot
Excellent on all fronts. Plot was amazing and the narrator was amazing as always. Not my usual choice of genre but it had me gripped from start to finish.

A very satisfying listen
I really enjoyed this. I'm always a bit wary of being able to sustain interest in a long listen but this just got better and better and I listened to the last quarter almost non stop and wasn't disappointed. There are lots of twists and turns but it all comes together very nicely. The historical detail contributes to the atmosphere without overwhelming the story.

I was disappointed with the ending
OK I was disappointed with the ending but that does not detract from the well researched and excellently performed book.
I did feel it was over long and at times I had to turn it off as I felt harangued by the tone...it was a bit 'nagging'. Perhaps a shorter story would have helped me.
I may try to listen again as the explanatory notes seemed far superior to the content. I must have missed some things. It was interesting to hear the writers planning and research, for me that may have been the more interesting part.
Value for money? An absolute bargain.
I found it a bit samey, never a joke, no change of pace in dialogue, all rather chaste considering, nonetheless a good read if you have the book or a worthy companion on Audible.

Historical mystery at its best- long live the underdog!
Thoroughly enjoyable book from start to the fabulous twist at the end, I never saw it coming and I can usually guess where plots are going.

the Wild Mouse ride of books
l really enjoyed this book, but l have reservations with an author who seems to rely on smoke and mirrors to bend plots and characters in the most bizarre ways. lt's pretty close to 'but just in the nick of time, a huge alien spaceship swooped down and rescued them all' her previous book was the same. l like plot lines that have more substance, but that said, it's very like a sixties tv show. The Prisoner, or Adam Adament. Escapism. But more like a series of whoppers than a book.
