Summary

"A fiendishly clever tale of ambition, deception, and power." (Derren Brown)

A chilling debut teeming with spirits, séances, and scandal – the must-listen novel for this spooky season.

Belfast, 1914. Two years after the sinking of the Titanic, high society has become obsessed with spiritualism, attending séances in the hope they might reach their departed loved ones.

William Jackson Crawford is a man of science and a sceptic, but one night with everyone sitting around the circle, voices come to him – seemingly from beyond the veil – placing doubt in his heart and a seed of obsession in his mind. Could the spirits truly be communicating with him or is this one of Kathleen's parlour tricks gone too far?

Based on the true story of Professor William Jackson Crawford and famed medium Kathleen Goligher, and with a cast of characters including Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Harry Houdini, The Spirit Engineer conjures a haunted, twisted tale of power, paranoia, and one ultimate, inescapable truth....

Everyone is talking about The Spirit Engineer

"Haunting, witty and deeply moving." (Jodie Whittaker)

"So clever it makes your head spin! The Spirit Engineer is a work of true invention and drama." (Jeremy Vine)

Captivating

I discovered a world I'd never imagined. It was described so authentically that it became a real and mysterious place. I listened for hours at a time, trying to make sense of the twists and turns of the plot made ever more intriguing by the fact that it was based on actual lives and events. And the narrator's sensitivity and understanding of the story brought the novel to life in a wonderful way.

Intriguing story, based on fact

I enjoyed listening to The Spirit Engineer, particularly because it’s based on a real person, with some events rooted in fact. AJ West’s research into William Jackson Crawford is clear, and Dickon Farmar does a fine job bringing these intriguing characters to life after more than a century. The story is filled with mystery, success, realisation, and sorrow—an excellent read, or in my case, listen. It offers an interesting glimpse into a scientist’s past and his shift from scepticism to a belief in the afterlife.

Well written and intelligent

And totally not my thing! This is one of those books where I can absolutely appreciate why other people loved it. If you like creepy stories with unsympathetic characters then it’s very cleverly plotted and written and you’ll love the ending. I didn’t but there you go.

Fascinating story

A long and detailed book, set in Belfast so it was lovely recognising parts of my home city and the characters who lived there in the early 20th century when Belfast was an important centre for linen, rope making, shipbuilding and commerce. Robinson and Cleaver, Pirrie and others feature and if you know Belfast you’ll recognise the names and even now, places named after these characters. I had no idea the popularity of spiritualism here at that time was a part of our history linked to the sinking of Titanic and this man was a real person. A fascinating storyline.
