Summary
Brought to you by Penguin.
Shot-proof, fever-proof and a veteran campaigner at the age of 25, Brigade-Major Harry Smith is reputed to be the luckiest man in Lord Wellington's army. But at the siege of Badajos, his friends foretell the ruin of his career. For when Harry meets the defenceless Juana, a fiery passion consumes him. Under the banner of honour and with the selfsame ardour he so frequently displays in battle, he dives headlong into marriage. In his beautiful child-bride, he finds a kindred spirit and a temper to match. But for Juana, a long year of war must follow....
Georgette Heyer was for over 50 years one of the most prolific, successful and best writers of historical romance. In The Spanish Bride she shows the skill that has won the hearts of a new wide audience in the 21st century.

Long, detailed, but a good listen.
This novel has clearly been deeply researched, and an accompanying map of the area would have been useful. A graphic presentation of the truth of war at the time of Napoleon.

Very different Heyer brilliantly narrated
A wonderful a history of the Napoleonic war battles rather than a novel. Harry and Juana's love story lightens the grimness and gore of the many dreadful battles. The narrator is superb.

Astonishing!
I was not expecting this. Besides the usual Heyer romance this is a carefully researched and detailed account of Wellington’s campaigns against Napoleon. It is fascinating and incredibly informative and I found it most enjoyable. Don’t read it if you just want a slushy romance!

Not your usual Heyer romance .
Detailed and well researched story brilliantly narrated really brings to life Wellingtons peninsular campaign describing not only the battles but the tribulations of army life in the early 19 th century . The love story is incidental though nowadays the heroines age would be thought inappropriate.

Great story based on fact.
This is also a great introduction to the Peninsula Wars and gives an over view of the battles, the generals and and the soldiery who campaigned in it. The story is told against a romance that really happened - there was a Harry Smith and his young bride Juana who met and married then. You can find portraits of them both.
I also can recommend the narration. It is first class. He makes the characters come alive and reads with an impressive range of accents.
If you like this then you may possibly like The Infamous Army which is about Waterloo.

Fantastic audiobook
I have read this book and enjoyed it many times. However the audiobook is an improvement as, due to the wonderful narration, the battles come to life. It was always obvious that Georgette Heyer had researched the Peninsula campaign in depth, but the detail seems even more impressive as read by this narrator.

Dull dull dull
Not her usual quality of writing. Monotonous. Give it a miss if you enjoy her romances!
