Summary

When a new witch threat rises, only Hunter Astley can stop it....

In the face of dark magic and evil witches, a secret witch-hunting society works tirelessly to keep them at bay. The Malleus Maleficarum Council has strict rules and practises for eradicating magic.

Due to their work, witches have been almost forgotten, relegated to myth; but the rumours are starting to emerge of a new power that will throw the world into chaos.

As the only seventh generation witch-hunter, Hunter Astley is the best the MMC has to offer. With the help of his colleagues, it’s a race to track down this new threat and stop it...in any way he can.

Part one of the Witch-Hunter trilogy.

Loved it from the start!

What can I say except I loved it!?
From the start both the author and the narrator set the tone of the story which keeps you hooked right until the end.
I can’t really find any faults with this book except to say I saw a few things coming (no spoilers!), but through no fault of the author!
Wait, yes, I can find a fault; the other 2 books aren’t yet released on audio and I’m dying to see where the story leads next! :)
Buy it and listen to this immediately under peril of death!

An intriguing which hunter.

I was given a free copy of this book and I'm leaving an honest and voluntary review.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, its captivating and draws you in very quickly, the characters are very likable with pleany of depth giving a believability quality to them. the story is very well written and nicely paced. just the right amount of everything you'd want, love, friendship, loss and much much more. I'm chomping at the bit to find out what will happen next.

Jonathans narration is flawless, perfectly suited for the characters.
Easy 5 star all round.

Not the usual Witch story

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

Hunter Astley works for the The Malleus Maleficarum Council who have for centuries eradicated evil witches and dark magic.
However there’s a new witch threat and only Hunter can stop them.
I love books on witches and other supernaturals and I like this goes about things in a new way.
I am going to buy book 2 now.

The narration brings this story to life.

I am not normally a fan of audiobooks, as I like to imagine in my mind what each character would sound and look like. However, being a big fan of this author especially 'The Witch-Hunter Series' (of which I have the full printed collection) I could not resist giving this audiobook a go, and I can tell you now this book blew me away. The narrator does an amazing job.

The story in general.
I was hooked from the start, drawn into the night-time setting of Venice with lights sparkling across the canal. Then being introduced to the enigmatic, charming English gentleman, Hunter Astley, seventh generation Witch-Hunter. Tall dark & handsome with classic good looks, he is the dream of many a young woman, all seemingly attracted to him, but not it seems the tall pretty brown haired girl. Her hazel eyes had locked on Hunter for the briefest of moments. Then she turned away, obviously dissatisfied with what she saw. Her loss. Or would things turn out differently in the long run?

It's difficult to give a review and not give anything away, so I will say little else, just that I was hooked. I read the whole book in two sittings. (Yet listened to the audio book when I was tired and my eyes were too sore to read) Hunter was a character I could not help but love, he had me in a swoon that's for sure. His trusty friend & sidekick 1st generation but highly intelligent Yorkshire man James, was amusing but sometimes a little annoying with his accent. The two friends devoted to one another although this did surprise me considering all they endured. Especially in the company of Sophie new Witch-Hunter in training.

A fascinating story I simply could not put down. I thought it might be a little predictable? In some things it was and then in others I was twisted around by events, several I never saw coming. This audio book is a great addition to my collection and one I will be sure to listen to again.

A good story

Listened to it in one sitting. Will definitely be checking out other books in the series. I think fans of Deborah Harkness’ All Souls trilogy would enjoy it.

witchhunters against witches

Loved it.

The magic, the romance, the friendship bonds.

This is the first book and I look forward to the next

The narrator helps bring the story and characters to life.

One problem was the length, it's a short book and without being in a bundle I hesitate to use my credit.

An excellent adventure

In my opinion a good fantasy novel needs 3 things a well realised world, a compelling story and engaging characters.

The shadow rises delivers all 3.

When we are introduced to the protagonist Hunter I initially rolled my eyes and expected an arrogant hero in a contrived story, however while the story doesn't offer anything necessarily new or challenging it was nevertheless entertaining throughout and there is certainly more to Hunter than meets the eye.

The narration is also excellent handelling different characters well and giving the whole story the very English atmosphere the author intended.

A great opening to the trilogy!
