Summary
When Jill's husband discovers he can never have children, it tears a hole in their marriage that Jill doesn't know how to repair. Frustrated, she seeks comfort in her friends: fierce Leigh, with her high-powered career and doting family, and sweet, uncomplicated Wendy, who has a rock-solid marriage any woman would envy.
Leigh and Wendy's lives seem perfect. But beneath the surface are secrets that could tear their friendship apart.
Leigh has grown tired of her stay-at-home husband and is looking for excitement - outside of the marriage bed. And after seventeen years of marriage, Wendy can't shake the sense that there is something missing in her life.
As Jill is drawn deeper into her friends' relationships, she is confronted by a temptation of her own: an intriguing stranger whose good looks and charm spark an instant connection.
Full of the realities of modern-day marriage, The Secrets of Married Women asks the question: how well can we ever know our husbands, our friends, or even ourselves?

Worth persevering
I was not keen on this initially as I found the Geordie accent a bit over the top. I persevered through the first chapter and soon got into the story. I’ve seen some really bad reviews of this book but I think that overall it’s rather a good story.

This is essentially a mournful story ….. avoid
This is a gloomy story about how love disappoints finally and inevitably. Perhaps. It’s gloomy as can be and despite everything not at all life affirming. You can tell it’s doomed by the tone of voice of the narrator.

2nd listen as good as the 1st!
With about 2 years between listenings, I needed the same number of tissues close to the end of the story.
The narrator is fabulous and offers authenticity with her North East accent.
This is the first of two Carol Mason stories........there will be more, for sure!

Don't bother!
I've had to abandon this book half way through because I cannot listen to any more of the dull, pointless rubbish.

Ruined By One Scene (TW: rape)
I was really enjoying this book, until the main character was raped and then repeatedly victim-blamed for it.
She goes from kissing a man once, to him ripping at her clothes and screwing her roughly, whilst ignoring her requests to stop (as well as her struggling not to be physically sick plus her lack of any physical arousal). For the rest of the book, she is painted as a fallen woman, someone who "made all [her] own choices" and someone who ultimately has to come to grips with the way she's apparently brought all this on herself.
The author has written a character clearly struggling with PTSD (flashbacks, panic attacks, huge gaps in her memory, etc) yet has let the story continue as if the main character is to blame. She could fix it (I'm 20 minutes from the end... it's possible) but it would have to be a hell of an about-face.
Toxic views of sex/adultery, which conflate rape and consensual sex, plus an 1800s-style, puritanical, "men will be men, and their transgressions are forgivable, but wicked women will be punished" vibe. VERY disappointing, especially since I loved the last book I read by this author.
Sidenote: lovely vocal performance; but the voice actor is definitely not from Northeast England. She makes a good effort at the accents, though, and each character has a unique and recognisable voice of his/her own. Impressive.
