About this listen

Coming from a huge close-knit family of street traders long before it was legalized, Stephen Sayers spent his early years on the barrows, witnessing constant brushes with the law. Aunties and uncles were frequently incarcerated and a hatred and distrust of authority swelled within the younger members of the family.

The scene was set. Standing alongside his brothers and cousins in vicious street fights and feuds with rival gangs, they've been linked to multi-million pound armed robberies, extortion, unsolved gangland murders, and protection rackets. Those links made them a formidable force in the criminal underworld. Stephen gives us a first-hand account of growing up as a Sayers and living up to the reputation the name carries. He didn't just carve out a criminal career, he wrote it in blood on the streets.

If you've heard the rumors...if you believe them...the Sayers run Newcastle.

Very interesting read

More than I expected. Actually had a story through out the whole book. A peek into northern crime. Sounded like a relatively normal family, looking out fur each other.

Great insight to another world.

I loved the detailed stories of how the struggle between the man on the street versus the authorities played out. Ultimately it doesn’t pay but what a journey.

The background of the family

Needed to be read by a Geordie, the narrator was actually quite off putting. Expected it to be more true to life and expected a better narrator. Very abrupt end to the story.

Gripping, brutally forthright

Really enjoyed this, real brilliant insight into a life of crime told from the heart.
Probably would if they had used a Geordie as opposed to Yorkshireman to tell the story

Superb

All crime fans will love this book, honest, brutal at times, and pulls no punches, doesn’t glamourise it, a true honest account. Well done Steve and Stephen,

This was a good listen but would have Ben better if read with a Geordie accent

Needs narrated by a local

Good listen but would be much better with a geordie talking. As a local it’s hard to listen to someone from not here talking about a geordie
