Summary

There was a time when Lindy Morris escaped to London and walked along the Thames in the moonlight. When life was full and exciting.

Decades later, Lindy lives back with her Auntie Bell on the edge: on the edge of Donegal and on the edge of Granda Morris's land. Granda Morris is a complicated man, a farmer who wanted sons but got two daughters: Auntie Bell and Lindy's mother, who disappeared long ago.

Now, Lindy and Bell live the smallest of lives, in a cottage filled with unfulfilled dreams. But when the secrets they have kept for thirty years emerge, everything is rewritten. Will Lindy grasp who she is again?

Critic reviews

"Delaney never succumbs to cliche, but creates a vividly realised narrative in which you long for her characters to break free and triumph." (The Observer)

"Superb. An assured second novel. The destructive impulses driving Delaney's characters reap a bitter harvest. Delaney has a long and fruitful career ahead of her." (Financial Times)

"Thoroughly absorbing, it didn't let me down." (The Guardian)

Beautifully written

The writing is beautiful and the narration perfect. The claustrophobia of a small town dynamics was thought provoking and as myself the daughter of a Northern Irish mother, brought up in England, I found the general suspicion of the English tongue disquieting because I spent a lot of time in Ireland as a child and it made me wonder how people viewed me. It's a gritty and sad story. I did wonder how Bel and Lindy could remain so petrified of Grandad Morris by the time they had reached their 50's and 70's. I didn't like the happily ever after ending. It was too unrealistic to take on board.

Brilliantly narrated

Really enjoyed listening to this book, which was brilliantly narrated. I always like it when I book keeps you guessing and you can’t work out what’s going on. It kept me hooked. Strong women, but a shame they had to be so.

An absolute cracker …

After reading and loving ‘before my actual heart breaks’, I needed to source another Tish Delaney book pronto.
TBH, I did not expect that I would enjoy this book as much as my first offering from Tish, but I was very wrong indeed.
The characters in this book will remain with me for a very long time. Particularly Belle. “Lindy … “
The narrator Bronagh Waugh is absolutely exceptional. I have laughed and cried throughout this book and cannot recommend it enough.
Desperately waiting now for more from Tish.

Absolutely brilliant read!

Beautifully written & narrated! I was so invested that I could barely press pause!
Brilliant main character and sensitive description of the use of self harm as a response to trauma - highly recommend.

Raw

The story felt as if it was a autobiography such depth and detail. Transported into that world couldn’t stop listening.

A slow burn

It was a bit depressing and at times I couldn’t face any more of the depressing nature of the book but also the end was surprising and was very well written and well read
