About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

'I'm a fairly calm fellow; I don't usually get het up about things. But I was, let's say, concerned when I tuned into the Moscow Echo radio station and heard that the Kremlin had put a price on my head. The announcement didn't quite say "dead or alive". But it came close....' (Mikhail Khodorkovsky, March 2021)

Mikhail Khodorkovsky has seen behind the mask of Vladimir Putin. Once an oil tycoon and the richest man in Russia, Khodorkovsky spoke out against the corruption of Putin's regime—and was punished by the Kremlin, stripped of his entire wealth and jailed for more than 10 years.

Now freed, working as a pro-democracy campaigner in enforced exile, Khodorkovsky brings us the insider's battle to save his country's soul. Offering an urgent analysis of what has gone wrong with Putin, The Russia Conundrum maps the country's rise and fall against Khodorkovsky's own journey, from Soviet youth to international oil executive, powerful insider to political dissident, and now a high-profile voice seeking to reconcile East and West.

With unparalleled insight, written with Sunday Times best-selling author Martin Sixsmith, The Russia Conundrum exposes the desires and damning truths of Putin's Russia, and provides an answer to the West on how it must challenge the Kremlin—in order to pave the way for a better future.

Great book

I really enjoyed this from start to finish. This is brilliantly written but while it's s tragic history it ends with hope.

Great book!

Great insight from one of Russia’s biggest businessmen! I definitely understand more about the history of the oligarchs and about Putin.

If you want insight this delivers

You get Russia from the horses mouth. The chapter on his time in prison camps is fascinating and could be the genesis for a memoir or a novel. At times, yes, it’s churning what we already know, but it’s an indictment from a former insider that has moral force. Bravo a strong and stoic man.

Faith & hope for the future

For anyone who wants to understand what has happened in Russia over the last 4 decades, this book is a must read. Written by a man who knows the truth from the inside and whose ambition is to help develop a better Russia, not just for the sake of Russians but for the rest of the world too.

Compelling argument

Certainly this is only one side of the story, but I found the case that Khodorkovsky is making to be plausible and credible. It is a well prepared and presented argument. It is also absolutely up to date (in September 2022)

It would be interesting to hear Mr. Putin address some of the claims made against him, just to hear the other side of the story, but I guess this is unlikely.

Narration was very good also. Clear, articulate and easy to understand. I get the impression that a lot of thought, and a lot of work has gone into preparing this book.

Wonderful background

I enjoyed hearing first hand from someone who had had the courage to question the Kremlin, whilst his fellow oligarchs kept their heads down. It amazes me that 140million can be controlled by such a self serving few.
A terrific book.

An amazing book

Gives hope for the future of Russia. Despite an insight to how Russians think they are condemned to un-freedom because of their past. Here’s hoping
