About this listen

Fierce winds, howling seas and deadly secrets await in The Raging Storm, the latest mystery featuring Detective Matthew Venn from Ann Cleeves, the number one bestselling author and creator of Vera and Shetland.

When Jem Rosco – sailor, adventurer and local legend – blows into town in the middle of an autumn gale, the residents of Greystone, Devon, are delighted to have a celebrity in their midst. The residents think nothing of it when Rosco disappears again; that’s the sort of man he is.

Until the lifeboat is launched to a hoax call-out during a raging storm and his body is found in a dinghy, anchored off Scully Cove, a place with legends of its own.

This is an uncomfortable case for DI Matthew Venn. He came to the remote village as a child, its community populated by the Barum Brethren that he parted ways with, so when superstition and rumour mix and another body is found in the cove, Matthew soon finds his judgement clouded.

As the stormy winds howl and the village is cut off, Venn and his team start their investigation, little realizing their own lives might be in danger. . .

Now a major ITV series, The Long Call, starring Ben Aldridge.

Another great North Devon mystery

I know the area where the Matthew Venn books are set really well, and I’ve always loved Ann Cleeves books, especially Vera & Shetland, so this series is just wonderful. In this 3rd book there was more of a concentration on the case, and possibly less of the personal lives of Matthew, Jen & Ross, but enough to keep us involved in their own stories. A brilliant listen, a couple of weird edits, but well characterised.

Great performance. Unbelievable ending

Fabulous performance. Really enhance the story with different accents for the cast of characters. Enjoyed the story and the atmospheric setting. Found the ending unbelievable and felt rather let down at the end.

Raging Storm

I thought this novel was brilliant and so true to Anne Cleeves . The clarity of the characters you can picture them and the Notth Devon village with its little cliques and hidden jealousies . Love Matthew and Jonathon, the thoughtful reticent Matthew and the bubbly sparkling Jonathan who work so well together . Also love Gem and can picture the ambitious Ross . More please Anne

Another classic Ann Cleeves book

Thoroughly enjoyed the story and interview with Ann Cleeves at the end. An adventure story where the Devon coastline and changeable weather become a clear part of the story. Love the Matthew Venn character and all of the relations created. Highly recommended and hope for many more sequels.

Poor reading

I wish I could be more positive about the performance of this story but I found almost every sentence spoken was confusing, either wrongly spaced or badly weighted, almost as if it was completely sight - read. The accents or differentiation between characters were simplistic and the pacing was such that the story was not gripping but rather like having to get through a document in order to reach the conclusion. I thought it couldn’t have been an actor speaking in fact.

My least favourite of ACs books

I have enjoyed all of the books including Mathew ven but somehow I didn’t find I cared enough about the villagers . Sort of guessed the outcome and unlike some of the other books this one didn’t keep me up nights
I will buy the next in this series though so the quality of the writing still wins out
