Summary

The first book in the million-copy, Wall Street Journal bestselling Kingfountain series from Jeff Wheeler.

King Severn Argentine’s fearsome reputation precedes him: usurper of the throne, killer of rightful heirs, ruthless punisher of traitors. Attempting to depose him, the Duke of Kiskaddon gambles...and loses. Now the duke must atone by handing over his young son, Owen, as the king’s hostage. And should his loyalty falter again, the boy will pay with his life.

Seeking allies and eluding Severn’s spies, Owen learns to survive in the court of Kingfountain. But when new evidence of his father’s betrayal threatens to seal his fate, Owen must win the vengeful king’s favor by proving his worth - through extraordinary means. And only one person can aid his desperate cause: a mysterious woman, dwelling in secrecy, who truly wields power over life, death, and destiny.

Good and bad is not black and white

I like how things are not how they seam and that good and bad is not black and white but everyone is sort of. In the grey area

Intriguing tale of hard times with added 'magic'

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Highly recommend this audiobook - it neatly wraps a tale of hardship, loss, grief and hard times along with fun, innocent child play and magic

What other book might you compare The Queen's Poisoner to, and why?

I would compare this book with a favourite series of mine, the first of which is Schooled in Magic by Christopher G Nuttall, which has a young girl at the centre of mayhem, trying to fit in against all odds.
This book, is as good in that it creates a young child, in the midst of a paranoid king's court who is trying to survive.

What does Kate Rudd bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

Kate very cleverly gives 'life' to each character with her expert range of accents and speed of reading.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

yes, after my first half hour, I became hooked and looked forward to see what was yet to happen.

Any additional comments?

I have just purchased the 2nd book in this series, and can't wait to download it!
Highly recommend the first book to those who enjoy adventure and magic in the times of kings and courts......

Sadness

If you are looking for battles and betrayals, then this book maybe a let down. It mainly concerns the story of two young 7-8 years olds who have ended up at Kingfountain for two different reasons; Owen, son of the Duke of Kiskaddon was to be held as hostage to ensure his father's loyalty, and Elysabeth Victoria Mortimer (Evie), granddaughter of Duke Horwath, brought to act as a companion for Owen.

Life at the Court is not easy. However, Ankarette, the Queen's poisoner, is there to help Owen survive and to teach him how to use his Fountain- Blessed powers. It is only be convincing King Severn that Owen is valuable will the King keep him alive.

I found this book to be very sad the reasons for which will become clear once you listen.
