About this listen

The Provincial Lady Goes Further is the immediate sequel to Diary of a Provincial Lady - and life mirrors art.

Our Provincial Lady has found herself, unexpectedly, with a literary success on her hands! She is suddenly 'somebody', both in her Devonshire environs and in London, where she establishes a bolthole - ostensibly so she could concentrate on the much-awaited sequel, but also so that she can enjoy the fruits of being a best-selling author!

In real life, this sequel was the first of many to come, as E. M. Delafield worked imaginatively to satisfy the public demand for antidotes to modernism - especially the hauteur of the Bloomsbury Set.

In art, The Provincial Lady Goes Further, using the same diary format, proves to be just as amusing (if not more so) as its predecessor, and full of pointed observations about her targets - in this case fashionable London of the 1930s (it was published in 1932).

Reader Georgina Sutton again delights in the tones of an upper-class lady, who, up from the country and immersed semi-willingly in artistic and fashionable environs, can't quite equate the posing, the outrageous dresses and equally outrageous behaviour with her eminently well-grounded sense of humour.

Can't get enough Provincial Lady.

Loved these books and delighted to find the audio versions absolutely perfect. Georgina Sutton's narration couldn't be improved on. Amaze my husband by laughing out loud while embarked on unpleasant domestic tasks - with this as accompaniment, I'm happy to clean all day.

Hooray,more Provincial Lady!

Where does The Provincial Lady Goes Further rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This series of books have been favorites for many years, and it's great to have them as audiobooks. My audiobook rankings start with 'wonderful productions of wonderful books' and go down from there - this is in that top category.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Probably The Provincial Lady herself - but I do like Mademoiselle, with the snide comments...

What about Georgina Sutton’s performance did you like?

She is an excellent narrator and gets the tone of the books just right.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No - it's not that kind of book,I'm very familiar with it and the pleasure is in being able to dip in and out.

Really Good

The first volume is also available on Audible and I have very much enjoyed each of them. Set not that long before the outbreak of WW2, it humorously describes a way of life in middle class England that now seems as if it happened centuries ago and I think this, and its gentleness, is what I most like about these books.

Really good narration.

Loved it!

Read with a perfect understanding of the era's tone and time, this domestic novel of middle class life set in the Edwardian years is a delightful, gently amusing drawing of everyday life. Written from the point of view of a woman who is a middle-aged wife, mother and author it takes you into an easier time away from your concerns and stresses. Sociable and amusing, our story teller trusts us to take her as we find her, not to judge, and to relax and listen to her telling of a life more interesting than she may have time to realise.

Disappointing

I bought this, as I so enjoyed the first book in the series. Georgina Sutton was a fantastic narrator, and the writing was strong enough for me to ignore annoying character traits of the adults in the book.

However, this one was a bit of a let down. Georgina Sutton is still on fine form, but this follow-up reminds me of when a film is very successful, against all expectations, so a sequel is rushed into production, with a decent story but poor execution. Also, too many new 'character's were introduced, at the expense of old favourites; where was "Our Vicar's Wife"? Mrs Blenkensop? Lady B? Lady Frobisher? A lot of the story just seemed forced. The only thing that kept me listening to the end, was the knowledge that this wasn't someone pretending to write in that era, but that it was an authentic work from its time. So I was happy to listen to the use of language and the description of places and events, knowing that they were genuine.

I have the other books from the series in my Wish List, but I don't think I'll be purchasing them. Such a shame.
