Nobel laureate, world-renowned doctor and human rights activist Dr Mukwege has dedicated his life to caring for victims of sexual violence. Over the past two decades living and working in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, he has stood up to soldiers and warlords, survived massacres and multiple assassination attempts, never swaying from his mission.
In this book, Dr Mukwege interweaves his own dramatic story with the experiences of a range of extraordinary characters: the women he has treated - many of whom, after suffering unspeakable brutality, have had the strength to heal and rebuild their lives - as well as the people he has worked with, and survivors of sexual violence whom he has met during his years of advocating for women's rights around the world.
Early on in his career, Dr Mukwege realised what he was dealing with in the DRC was merely the extreme end of a global scourge. Sexual violence is the most common, under-reported and least prosecuted crime in the world. It does not occur in a vacuum. We are all implicated - whether the violence occurs in war-torn countries, or on college campuses in the West.
The Power of Women is a rallying cry to rid our societies of violence against women, and to better learn from their resilience, strength and power. It challenges us to think about our own experiences and how all of us have a part to play in bringing about change.

An amazing read!
Insightful, well written and well paced, interesting. Would recommend this book to anyone who whishes to learn about sexual violence (not only in the context of Congo) and all topics related (such as dealing with trauma and healing).

Inspirational and humbling.
What a man Dr Dennis Mukawege is to the Congolese women and also to the world.
His resilience and dedication is unfathomably.
This book is brutal and honest in its delivery, but through out this there is a feeling of hope when everything is stacked against the women of Congo.

The Power of Women
This is an important book which should be widely available in schools but sadly I couldn’t finish it…too harrowing. The women the Doc writes about were so strong, and I couldn’t imagine the horrors they went through some just children…sad so sad ….

Absolutely awe inspiring
I came across the phenomenal Dr Mukwege when I watched a documentary on his Panzi hospital in 2014 and he’s left an indelible mark on me ever since. He is someone that just gets it and his bravery and courage is outstanding. The book details his work with survivors of sexual violence in the eastern region of the DRC, his childhood and how his work has expanded to sexual violence survivors all over the world. It’s heartbreaking, some of the depictions of the horrors some of his patients have experienced, left me feeling sick and I had to pause the book multiple times. But there’s hope, he analyses the root causes of the violence against women, what we can do to combat it and how we can all play a part. I finished this book more in awe of this amazing man and determined to do all I can to help my sisters around the world. Dominic Hoffman did a phenomenal job with the narration and was a perfect fit. Would highly recommend.

What an amazing man
I am in awe of Dr Denis Mukwege, his compassion empathy and long term hope are overflowing.
His work is extraordinary, and the women of the Congo are lucky to have this advocate in their lives.
Despite everything and the hopelessness of some of the situations, he continues to strive forward.
Read/Listen and weep at the futility of war, anger at the men responsible, and then rejoice in this exceptional man who gives power to the women he serves.
Incredible listen, you will not be disappointed
