About this listen
Brought to you by Penguin.
I stood at the start of the new year feeling renewed, thinking that having got through the challenges of I'm a Celebrity. I had survived the toughest experience of my life, faced my worst fears and thrived. Surely 2020 would be a breeze. How wrong I was. It hadn't been anything close to the toughest experience of my life. My biggest challenge was just around the corner, and it was, for the most part, going to take place in my own home.
In March 2020, Kate Garraway's husband, Derek Draper, contracted COVID-19 and was placed in a medically induced coma. Initially, Kate was told that he would not survive. Still in hospital and in a critical condition, he is thought to be the UK's longest-fighting COVID-19 patient.
In this intimate book, Kate shares her deeply personal story. As well as recounting how the illness took hold of their lives, she writes about how she is coping with the uncertainty of their future, how she's supporting her children through this traumatic time, how she has found strength in community and how she strives to hold on to hope even at the darkest of times. COVID-19 has affected everyone across the country in so many ways, and Kate hopes that by revealing her own personal experience, it will give comfort to others. By sharing the lessons she has learnt along the way, it will help us all begin to try to rebuild our lives.
Kate's exceptional courage, positivity and warmth shine through on every page, making The Power of Hope a truly inspiring story that will resonate with all of us whose lives continue to be touched by the virus.

Heartbreaking
Kate, Listening is like being in a conversation; emotional and inspiring and a treat to share and the outcome is miraculously that there is still hope. Something inside you and your family is so strong, you are all so brave and you are so coherent in your telling of your story. A privilege to share and we are all ‘hoping’ for the future to be brighter. Go Rob Rinder, who wouldn’t want him to call in a crisis! The royal family, David Beckham, Elton John, just wow! You are loved so much!

Inspirational
Kate Garraway is remarkable and courageous. As an ICU nurse it was really thought provoking hearing what it is like from a relative’s perspective. I really hope that she gets the miracle she deserves

Fantastic!
Absolutely loved ready this book. kate gives a clear, detailed and intimate insight into the ups and downs of hers, Derek's and her children's life during what could only have been an absolute nightmare. Sharing her worries and concerns for her family and for Derek whilst being real, being able to see some of the funny things in life, whilst keeping everything together for her children and for Derek. Well done Kate!! Such a great read, highly recommend.

Make sure you have tissues to hand....
I both looked forward to, and dreaded, listening to this book. I liked forward to it because I knew it would be enthralling and honest. I dreaded it because I also knew it would wring me out. And it did! This is a heartbreakingly honest account of the devastation that Covid can wreak on people's lives. Kate doesn't pull any punches and many parts had me in tears, but I was also in awe of her bravery, her determination and her deep love for her husband. Derek's life has been decimated by this virus, and he probably will never be the man he once was, or even anything close to it, but Kate's determination to do everything she can to help bring him back to some normality is inspiring!
