Summary

A dark offering from the Queen of Crime.

This represents the world-famous author’s most successful foray into the dark world of murder and black magic.

To understand the strange goings on at The Pale Horse Inn, Mark Easterbrook knew he had to begin at the beginning. But where exactly was the beginning?

Was it the savage blow to the back of Father Gorman’s head? Or was it when the priest’s assailant searched him so roughly he tore the clergyman’s cassock? Or could it have been the priest’s visit, just minutes before, to a woman on her death bed?

Or was there a deeper significance to the violent squabble which Mark Easterbrook had himself witnessed earlier?

Wherever the beginning lies, Mark and his sidekick, Ginger Corrigan, may soon have cause to wish they’d never found it…

One of her best

Great premise and storytelling. Some of Christie's more fully formed characters. Very enjoyable and even sparks the imagination.

Agatha Christie at her best

As a big Agatha Christie fan, it has taken me a while to get to The Pale Horse but I’m very glad I finally have. I won’t ruin the fun by telling you what’s it is about but I will just say that if you like her many other wonderful books you will love this too. Narrated perfectly.

Spooky, clever, funny and tantalising.

An excellent mystery from 1961. Nothing like the TV adaptation where they changed the plot, so you can enjoy this as a fresh story. Hugh Fraser's narration is once again perfect.

Unbeatable Agatha Christe

Hugh Fraser has once again narrated an absorbing Agatha Christe story. Most enjoyable on all counts.

Coherent plot but oh so slow.

The narrator was articulate with an easy listening voice, but it wasn't clear which of the male characters was speaking. As usual, the book had a more realistic plot than the TV adaptation. The style of writing was ponderous; too much telling and not enough showing. The dialogue was stilted. I kept falling asleep, and had to rewind. The female characters, on the whole, were strong women. The plot was clever, but the culprit was obvious from quite early on.

Didn’t want it to end!

Even though I know the story I wanted to go on and on! Great narration - even the female voices are perfectly acceptable with none of the embarrassment I usually feel with male narrators attempting female characters. Really enjoyed this classic tale.

Very Enjoyable

This book made a change from the usual Poirot and Miss Marple stories. It was well written and just as good as all Agatha Christies other novels. Well worth adding to my Christie collection.

I’d never heard of this Agatha Christie story before. Glad I bought it. Story is good and the narration perfect IMO.
