Only a small number of students survived, a group the media dubbed as The Ones Who Got Away. Now, web designer Liv Arias, along with the rest of the survivors, have returned to the small Texas town to tell their stories for a documentary. Which means Liv seeing former star-athlete and old flame Finn Dorsey.

A lot happened between them that night and Liv is ready to end their decade-long riff and move on. But when her attempt at closure turns into a steamy kiss, moving on proves much more difficult than either of them thought....

The one who got away

The story line was a great idea but I just couldn’t connect with the characters.

All the feels!

This was such a heartwrenching hit-you-in-the-emotional-gut read, filled with tragedy and lost chances, you really can't help but root for these former Long Acre students. In town for a documentary detailing the tragedy that happened on the night of their senior prom when students were gunned down, Liv comes face to face with her former flame, football star and town hero, Finn Dorsey. The guy who kept their relationship a secret and abandoned her the night of the shooting... leaving her alone and unprotected while he saved some other girl. Finn never got over the guilt of how he acted that day, He joined the FBI to take down a vicious gang of gun dealers with links to supplying kids with weapons like those used in his own school shooting.

I read this book shortly after listening to Amber Springs by Siobhan Davis and it had the same emotional depth and soul deep healing theme, but unlike Amber Springs which focuses on the sister of a high school shooter, this is the perspective of survivors looking back over a decade later and how the trauma impacted their lives.

Just as Liv and Finn are trying to run from their pasts, the connection between them heats up again, making them having to decide if they should slow down or risk racing right on by their second chance of the future they always wanted.
