Magical but real...
A very nearly believable fable with odd characters flitting between times and actions, being young and very very old, in this world and another. It's almost mythic with a almost logical narrative which requires some suspension of belief in order to immerse yourself in the ocean and figure out for yourself what is happening to the main character. Not sure that's meant for children, but I had to move my mind into a child's mind to connect and link some actions.

A captivating cosmos in your pocket...
Gaiman expresses questions surrounding the sheer vastness of our very existence and perception of reality in language as familiar and comforting as the farmhouse-table fare he conjures.
But there is terror here too, in all its visceral glory...
Evocative, appealing, frightening, and cosmically universal in its scope, this book wove its spell around me, making it hard to concentrate on anything else: I've not read a book that has captivated me so completely in a very long time.
I am 8 years old again - mirroring the narrator - content to spend a rainy day reading by the window. 8 years old: when your mind is still open to the incomprehensible vastness of possibility, imagination unfettered as you lose yourself in other worlds.

A masterpiece
Neil Gaiman demonstrates his artistry with words in this beautiful story. His narration adds to the magic of the piece. So glad that I discovered this gem.

What's this? A fantasy that doesn't rely on pornography to be good? Wow!
This is what I would describe as a conglomerate fantasy novel full of unoriginal ideas but well constructed and just for once, by an author at any rate, well enough read. I've given this book top rating just because at least if it proves anything it's the fact that a fantasy/horror can be just as good without needing to blur the lines between this genre and pornography and that's a good thing. Maybe other idiot horror so-called writers ought to try it some time but that's just wishful thinking.
This book reminded me of a lot of other books in the same genre. One called 'The Little Broomstick' springs to mind while reading this and also the boble oddly enough. The temptation of Christ in the wilderness. Also an old movie called 'The house that would not die' and an Algernon Blackwood story I think it was called 'The House in the Square'. So you see, not original but very well executed and well read. A few too many 'saids' for my taste but hey, don't they all do that?

Small but not lightweight
A dramatic and dark story told through the eyes of a 7 year old boy. Any childishness is reflected only with the honesty as to how a young child feels the world revolves around them. Prepare to hear about real fear as the tale of old creatures, creation and mysterious beasts hurtles through to the conclusion of this novella.
I would recommend this for adults as well as older children.
I actually like the author narrating this book as I do believe he has a personal investment in the experiences and treatment of the protagonist.
